Corrigan Earns 100th Win At Notre Dame As Irish Beat Army, 10-5, On The Road

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The 12th-ranked Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team (6-3, 4-0) plays its final two home games of the 2000 campaign when the Irish entertain Villanova and Fairfield this week. Notre Dame plays host to the Wildcats on Wednesday, April 19 at 3:00 p.m. and then faces Fairfield on Saturday, April 22 at 2:30 p.m. in the regular-season finale.

The Irish claimed their third straight with their 10-5 win over Army on the road at West Point, N.Y. on April 15. The victory marked the 100th win at Notre Dame for 12th-year Irish head coach Kevin Corrigan.

Notre Dame and Villanova, which owns an 8-3 record this season, will be meeting for the eighth time with the Wildcats holding a 4-3 advantage in the series. The Notre Dame-Fairfield matchup will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Stags come into the game with a 2-7 mark.

Notre Dame is ranked 12th in both the STX/United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and Inside Lacrosse polls. Villanova and Fairfield are not ranked in either poll.

RECAP OF ARMY GAME – Notre Dame won its third straight, and head coach Kevin Corrigan notched his 100th win with the Irish, in earning a 10-5 road victory at Army.

Juniors Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.) and Jon Harvey (Winchester, Mass.) and sophomore Devin Ryan (Kensington, Md.) each scored two goals in the game to lead a balanced Irish scoring attack.

Notre Dame, which jumped out to an early 4-1 first-quarter lead, outscored the Cadets 6-1 in the final two quarters after the two teams were deadlocked at 4-4 at intermission.

Senior defenseman Steve Fiamingo (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied the first score of the contest 2:31 into the contest. Notre Dame’s other scorers in the game included Todd Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.), Stedman Oakey (Charlottesville, Va.) and Steve Bishko (West Islip, N.Y.).

Army held the Irish scoreless in the second 15-minute stanza and was able to knot the game at 4-4 before the intermission on three unanswered goals. Bishko scored an extra-man goal to start the second half at the 11:15 mark of the third quarter. Back-to-back goals by Ryan and Harvey bolstered the Notre Dame lead to 7-4 before the Cadets pulled to within 7-5 with 3:49 remaining in the quarter. Ryan also added another goal in the third period with Harvey and Glatzel each scoring once in the fourth quarter. The Irish held the Cadets scoreless in the final 15-minute stanza.

Kirk Howell (Nashville, Ten.) made 14 stops in goal for the Irish who were outshot 37-36 in the contest.

HEAD COACH KEVIN CORRIGAN – Kevin Corrigan is in his 12th season at Notre Dame and 14th in the collegiate ranks. The three-time Great Western Lacrosse League coach of the year earned his 100th career win during the ’99 season in Notre Dame’s 10-8 victory over Hobart on March 27. He owns a 110-73 (.601) overall ledger and an 100-58 (.633) mark with the Irish. Corrigan has guided Notre Dame to eight NCAA tournament appearances and eight (either outright or shared) conference titles. Prior to 1998, he had led the Irish to six straight tournament berths from 1992-97. Under Corrigan in 1995, Notre Dame won its first-ever NCAA tournament game with a 12-10 victory over Duke which propelled the Irish into the quarterfinals for the first time in school history. Previous to his tenure at Notre Dame, he served as head coach at Randolph-Macon during the 1985 and 1986 campaign where his teams compiled a 10-15 mark.

SERIES RECORD VS. VILLANOVA – The Wildcats lead the series 4-3, but have lost three straight to Notre Dame. Villanova is 1-1 in games played at Notre Dame. The last meeting between the two teams at Notre Dame was in 1996 when the Irish earned an 8-2 victory.

SERIES RECORD VS. FAIRFIELD – This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Fairfield is one of two first-time opponents on the Irish schedule this season, the other was Pennsylvania, a team Notre Dame lost to on the road (10-7) on March 4.

CORRIGAN NOTCHES 100TH WIN AT NOTRE DAME – Notre Dame’s 10-5 win over Army marked the 100th victory for head coach Kevin Corrigan at Notre Dame. Corrigan, who is in his 12th season at Notre Dame owns a 100-58 (.633) mark as head coach. He is only the second coach in the program’s history. Rich O’Leary was head coach for eight season (1981-88) and produced a 64-42 mark for a 60.4 winning percentage.

GWLL DOMINANCE – With its 12-11 win over Butler on April 8, Notre Dame completed an undefeated season and wrapped up its second straight Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) title. The Irish, who shared the league crown with Ohio State and Butler a year ago, have won or shared the championship in nine of head coach Kevin Corrigan’s 12 seasons.

FIAMINGO NETS FIRST CAREER GOAL – Notre Dame senior captain Steve Fiamingo notched his first career goal in Saturday’s 10-5 win at Army when he tallied the contest’s initial score 2:31 into the contest. It marked the second goal scored by an Irish defenseman this season. Sophomore Michael Adams (Wilton, Conn.) had a goal in a 10-7 loss at Pennsylvania which is the only other goal scored by an Irish defensman this season.

FIAMINGO HONORED AS TOP SCHOLAR-ATHLETE – Senior Steve Fiamingo (Cincinnati, Ohio) was named the top men’s lacrosse scholar-athlete April 4, at the Academic Excellence Awards Dinner held at the Joyce Center. Fiamingo plays defense and is one of four captains for the Irish this season. He has started all nine games for Notre Dame in 2000.

RYAN HAS FIRST CAREER TWO-GOAL GAME – Sophomore Devin Ryan (Kensington, Md.) had the first multiple-goal game of his career when he scored twice in Notre Dame’s 10-5 win over Army. Ryan, who has four goals and an assist on the season, tallied both of his goals in the third quarter. He was one of three players in the contest to score two goals.

GLATZEL FINDING THE RANGE – Junior Tom Glatzel leads the team in scoring with a team-high 21 goals and eight assists (29 points). In ’99, Glatzel finished the campaign with 16 goals and eight assists after recording only two goals and dishing off one assist for three points. Since that rookie campaign he has 47 goals and 23 assists in 21 games for an average of 3.33 points per game. Glatzel, also is among Notre Dame’s ground ball leaders with 39.

DISHING IT OUT – For the third straight campaign, junior David Ulrich leads the team in assists. He has 11 on the season and 60 for his career which places his sixth on the all-time Irish list.

GROUND HOG – Kevin Higgins (Wilton, Conn.) became just the fifth player in Notre Dame history to collect 200 ground balls career ground balls this season. The senior midfielder reached that mark against Loyola on March 18. He has collected 222 ground balls in his three-plus seasons, good for third on the all-time list. Higgins leads the team with 43 ground balls this season. He has been the team’s ground ball leader each of the past two seasons. Higgins had 83 in 1999 and 79 in 1998.

IRISH STRONG AT HOME – In three (1994, 1995 and 1997) of the last seven years, Notre Dame finished the home portion of its season undefeated. The Irish posted 5-0 marks in both ’94 and ’95 and were 6-0 in ’97. Corrigan’s squad was 6-1 at home in ’99. Since 1984, Notre Dame has an 82-27 (.752) record at home and is 43-10 (.811) over the last eight-plus seasons in games played at Moose Krause Stadium and Loftus Sports Center (its indoor facility).

A FAMILIAR DEFENSE – While there has been a juggling of starting lineups in both the attack and midfield, the Irish defense has had a familiar starting three. Senior Steve Fiamingo, junior Mike Adams and sophomore A.J. Wright (Timonium, Md.) have started all nine games, while goalie Kirk Howell has been in the starting lineup in all eight of those contests as well.
