Notre Dame, Ind. – The third-ranked Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team ran its record to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST with a 17-7 win over the Boston College Eagles Sunday afternoon at the Loftus Sports Center.
The Irish got four goals each from senior Meredith Simon (Flemington, N.J.) and sophomore Crysti Foote (So., Suffern, N.Y.) and senior Lauren Fischer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added a goal and a career-high three assists to lead Notre Dame to its 11th straight win going back to the end of the 2003 season.
Abby Owen (Sr., Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and Kristen Gaudreau (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) scored two goals each while the Irish also got single goals from Kassen Delano (Sr., Alexandria, Va.), Mary McGrath (So., Bryn Mawr, Pa.), Jess Mikula (Jr., Chester, Md.) and Jackie Bowers (Jr., Springfield, Pa.).
Boston College got three goals from Carly St. Lucia, two from Elizabeth Kadison and one from Courtney Legath and Meggie O’Neill in the game.
The win makes Notre Dame 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in BIG EAST play. Boston College falls to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Notre Dame jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead less than seven minutes into the game as Foote and Owen each scored twice and Fischer had her only goal of the game with 23:26 left in the half for the five-goal margin.
After a Boston College timeout, the Eagles scored twice in a 38-second span on goals by St. Lucia and Kadison to make it 5-2.
The Irish answered back with five straight goals to put the game away. Simon got her first of the game with 14:21 left. Bowers scored a free-position goal and Gaudreau got the eventual game-winning goal with 8:16 left in the half to make it 8-2. Simon added a second goal and Delano closed the five-goal run with 2:49 left in the half for a 10-2 lead. Meggie O’Neill scored for the Eagles with 44 seconds left in the half.
Notre Dame scored the first five goals of the second period with Mikula getting her first of the season and Simon and Foote each scoring twice to close out their four-goal afternoons, making it 15-3 with just under 20 minutes left in the game.
Kadison stopped the Irish run with 16:25 left in the half with her second goal of the game to make it 15-4.
McGrath and Gaudreau closed out the Irish scoring to make it 17-4 before the Eagles scored the final three goals of the game with St. Lucia scoring twice and Legath once for the final of 17-7.
Notre Dame outshot Boston College by a 33-18 margin in the game. Carol Dixon (Jr., Pennsauken, N.J.) made seven saves for the Irish to pick up the seventh straight win of her career. Michelle Lawson made 10 saves in goal for the Eagles.
Notre Dame returns to action next Saturday, April 3 when the Irish travel to Storrs, Conn., to face the Connecticut Huskies in a BIG EAST game that will start at 12:00 noon.
