NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Former University of Notre Dame All-America midfielder David Earl (’11) and Team Canada captured an 8-5 win over the United States on Saturday in the title game of the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships.
Canada finished the tournament, which took place July 10-19 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., with a 6-1 record. The squad fell to the U.S., 10-7, in the tournament’s opening game before rattling off six straight wins en route to the title. Canada has won two of the last three FIL World Championships, which take place every four years.
Earl, whose father is Canadian, played in all seven contests and tallied one goal. He is the third Notre Dame alum to be part of a FIL World Championships title squad. Todd Rassas (`98) won a gold medal with the U.S. in 2002 and D.J. Driscoll (`06) helped the U.S. capture gold in 2010.
Earl currently plays professionally for the Chesapeake Bayhawks (MLL) and the Minnesota Swarm (NLL). Earl took to the field in 62 games for the Fighting Irish from 2008-11 and tallied 51 goals and 22 assists. He earned first team All-America honors in 2011 along with being named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year.
Earl wasn’t the only Notre Dame representative at the FIL World Championships. Rising sophomore midfielder Nick Koshansky played for Team Russia, which posted a 2-6 record. Koshansky competed in four contests, including one start, and scored one goal. Former Notre Dame players Jim Morrison (’05) and Dan Scolaro (`08) coached Team Norway to a 5-2 mark.
A record 38 nations participated in this year’s FIL World Championships and there were 142 games over the 10 days of the event.
