Devaiah Qualifies on Day 1 of ITA Regionals

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The ITA Regionals begin on Thursday in East Lansing as Michigan State is hosting the best players in the Midwest region. Notre Dame had three players begin their tournaments in the qualifying draw of 48 players on Thursday with everyone aiming for two wins to make it into the main draw of play.

Brian Bilsey, Jayanth Devaiah and Luis Llorens were all in first round qualifying action against opponents from Cleveland State, Youngstown State and Marquette respectively. The morning round saw Bilsey come off the court first with a 6-3, 6-4 win before Devaiah had a 6-2, 6-2 win of his own. Llorens would make it a perfect opening round for the Irish with a  6-3, 6-3 win ensuring that all players advanced to the final round of qualifying.

In the afternoon, Devaiah continued to show strongly as he won a close first set 6-4 over a Wisconsin freshman before rattling off 6-straight games to win the second and earn his bid to main draw play scheduled for Friday. Bilsey, playing Illinois State, and Llorens, playing DePaul, would bother fall to their opponents to end their singles tournaments.

Up Next:

Friday will see the start of main draw doubles and singles play. The morning will kick off with two rounds of doubles with 4 Notre Dame pairs competing. Then in the afternoon, singles play will begin where Devaiah will join 6 other Notre Dame players in the main draw of singles play. Sebastian Dominko, Peter Nad, Kyran Magimay, Yu Zhang, Chase Thompson and Jamie Corsillo will all begin singles play in the main draw.
