NOTRE DAME, Indiana — The Notre Dame baseball team couldn’t solve Boston College southpaw Dan Metzdorf and dropped a 6-0 decision to the Eagles on Saturday afternoon. It gives the team a split of the first two games of their three-game set, with the rubber match set for Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
Metzdorf held the Irish to two hits over eight innings, striking out three and walking a pair. The Irish hits came from Niko Kavadas, who owns three hits in the series, and Daniel Jung. Zack Martin took the loss, allowing one earned run in two innings. Cameron Brown was solid early in relief of Martin before eventually allowing five runs, four earned, in 5.2 innings of work.
How It Happened
Boston College struck first in the second inning, plating a run without a hit. The inning started with Anthony Maselli drawing a walk before Martin hit Joe Suozzi with a 2-1 pitch. After Brian Dempsey sacrificed the runners up 90 feet on a bunt, Jake Alu drove a flyball to center, scoring Maselli. Martin kept the Eagles to one run by getting Dante Baldelli to ground out to end the frame.
The Eagles added on thanks to a two-out rally in the fifth. Baldelli started the rally with a single through the right side before Jake Palomaki drew a walk. Chris Galland served a single through the right side to score Baldelli before Cameron Brown set Jack Cunningham down swinging to end the frame and strand a pair.
The visitors added another single run in the sixth. Maselli hit a one-out double to left-center before advancing to third on a groundout and scoring on a wild pitch. The Eagles added three more runs in the top of the eighth to provide the final margin.
