Eight Irish Athletes Qualify On Day One Of NCAA East Preliminaries

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After a first day of preliminary events, several Notre Dame track and field athletes will be moving on to the next round at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. The University of North Florida is hosting the meet at Hodges Stadium.

In the 400m hurdles, senior Jarrod Buchanon advanced with a time of 51.74. He’ll race in the next round this evening. On the women’s side, both senior Megan Yanik and junior Kaila Barber advanced to the next round as well. Yanik had a time of 58.39, and Barber ran 58.08 (13th place in the preliminary).

In the men’s 400m dash, junior Chris Giesting and senior Patrick Feeney both qualified for the next round with top-15 performances. Giesting placed 11th in the preliminary with a time of 46.27 and Feeney placed 14th with a time of 46.30.

On the women’s side of the event, senior Michelle Brown came in second in the prelims with a time of 52.38. Sophomore Margaret Bamgbose was right behind her with a time of 52.74, also qualifying for the next race. Sophomore Danielle Aragon also qualified for the next race of the women’s 1,500m run with a time of 4:18.53.

Today, field athletes will continue competing in preliminary rounds, while the track athletes who qualified yesterday will move on to run in quarterfinal rounds. Results following the action will be posted here on UND.com.
