Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team hoped to christen brand-new Arlotta Stadium with its first-ever regular-season win on Sunday afternoon. Kristen Goldberg and the Dartmouth College had other ideas as the Big Green handed the Irish their first loss of the season, 12-8.
Goldberg led Dartmouth with five goals on the afternoon with Greta Meyer and Sarah Parks scoring two each and Erin Massimi, Kat Collins and Hilary Smith scoring one goal each. Meyer added three assists to join Goldberg with five points in the game.
Notre Dame was led offensively by junior Kailene Abt (Huntington, N.Y.) who had three goals and an assist in the game. Sophomore Maggie Tamasitis (Boyertown, Pa.) added two goals and an assist while Ansley Stewart (Jr., Alexandria, Va.), Gina Scioscia (Sr., Summit, N.J.) and Jackie Doherty (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) added one goal each.
The loss dropped the eighth-ranked Irish to 2-1 on the season while 20th-ranked Dartmouth improved to 2-1 on the young season.
Defense was the name of the game in the first half as the two teams played almost 15 minutes before Dartmouth got on the scoreboard.
Smith, a sophomore midfielder, opened the scoring with 15:18 left in the opening half when she beat Irish goalkeeper Ellie Hilling (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) with a free-position shot. The Big Green lead would go to 2-0 at 13:47 when Goldberg collected her first of the game off a Meyer setup.
Notre Dame picked up its only goal of the first half at 12:05 when Abt beat Julie Wadland in the Dartmouth goal with a shot up high under the cross bar after breaking free along the goal line.
Goldberg closed out the half with two more goals at 8:35 and 2:39 for a 4-1 Dartmouth lead at the half. The one goal for Notre Dame was the fewest the Irish have scored in a half since April 9, 2008 when they were held scoreless in the first half by Northwestern in a 16-2 loss. The Big Green had a 14-6 shot advantage in the half.
Notre Dame opened the second half with a little more energy as the Irish scored twice in the first minute, 38 seconds apart to cut the lead to 4-3. Tamasitis picked up her first of the game just eight seconds into the second half when she converted a pass from Kaitlin Keena (Jr., Vienna, Va.) to make it 4-2.
Tamasitis then returned the favor at 29:14 when she found Abt with a nice pass from behind the goal. Abt beat Dartmouth goalkeeper Julie Wadland from in front of the goal to make it a 4-3 game.
Trailing by one, the Irish looked for the equalizer, but Dartmouth was the one to answer as the Big Green ran off five straight goals to make it 9-3. Parks scored at 26:53 and was followed by Meyer just 37 seconds later at 26:16 to give Dartmouth a 6-3 lead. Goldberg (24:37) got her fourth of the game and was followed by Parks at 13:57 and Meyer again at 13:04 for a six-goal lead.
Tamasitis scored her second of the night at 8:38 when she converted a pass for Stewart to make it 9-4.
Goldberg answered back with her fifth goal of the game with 6:23 left and the lead was back to six goals. The teams traded the next four goals as Stewart (4:31) and Scioscia (3:37) scored on free-position goals while Collins and Massimi scored for Dartmouth to make it 12-6 with 2:31 remaining in the game.
Abt’s third goal of the game came off an assist from Maggie Zentgraf (Sr., Charlottesville, Va.) at 2:20 and Doherty closed the scoring with 1:09 left in the game as she beat Wadland after getting set up by Abt coming down the middle for the 12-8 final score.
The Irish had a 17-16 shot advantage in the second half but for the game were out shot by Dartmouth, 30-23. Wadland made 12 saves in the game while Hilling had nine, a career-high, in the Notre Dame goal.
The Irish are now off until Saturday, March 13 when they travel to Berkeley, Calif., to face the University of California Golden Bears. Game time is set for 12:00 noon (Pacific Time) and 3:00 p.m. in South Bend.
