NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Junior Lael O’Shaughnessy and sophomore Maureen Whitaker each scored four goals to lead the Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team to a 22-3 win over Ohio University on Saturday at the Loftus Sports Center. The Irish used goals from 11 different players and scoring streaks of 10 in the first half and eight in the second half for the win. Three Notre Dame goalkeepers helped hold the Bobcats to just three goals on 12 shots. The Irish improve to 2-0 with the win and will face Richmond on Sunday at 12:00 p.m., at the Loftus Sports Center.
Junior goalkeeper Tara Durkin played the first 38 minutes and allowed just two goals while making eight saves. Junior Carrie Marshall and freshmen Jen White combined to hold the Bobcats to one goal in the final 22 minutes of the second half. Notre Dame held a 32-12 advantage in shots and failed to score on just 10 of its shots. The Irish defense held Ohio to just seven shots on goal. Notre Dame doubled Ohio in groundballs 35-17.
Notre Dame built a 13-2 lead at halftime after scoring 10 consecutive goals from 2-1 to 12-1 at the 2:15 mark of the first half. O’Shaughnessy scored four of the first 12 Irish goals before Ashley Boccia scored a free position goal with 57 seconds left in the second half. Sophomore Tina Fedarcyk scored with four seconds remaining in the first half for a 13-2 Notre Dame advantage at halftime.
The Irish defense held the Bobcats scoreless for 26:35 in the second half before Brooke Bowersock scored at 3:25 to stop a streak of eight consecutive Notre Dame goals in the second half by eight different players. The 22 goals, 14 assists and 36 points mark single-game highs for the Irish in their four-year history. Notre Dame’s bench accounted for nine goals and five assists.
