BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (13-0-1, 8-0) defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies (4-10-3, 0-8-1) in a 5-0 shutout road win on Thursday evening.
Sophomore forward Izzy Engle led the way with her first hat trick of the season, her second hat trick of her career. Engle also recorded an assist for an impressive 7 points on the night. She leads the ACC with 16 goals and is averaging 1.14 goals per game this season.
Sophomore Annabelle Chukwu also continued her incredible form, scoring her 11th goal of the season. Junior Morgan Roy also got on the score sheet with her third goal of the 2025 campaign.
The Notre Dame defense recorded its sixth clean sheet of the season, as Sonoma Kasica and Jackie Holloman combined for five saves in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Chukwu would strike first for Notre Dame as Engle found her fellow sophomore forward in the left side of the box. Chukwu’s shifty footwork allowed her to get the shot off, finding the back of the net in the bottom right corner for a 1-0 advantage in the 16th minute.
In the 23rd minute, Engle beat a pair of defenders as she got the shot off inside the area with a quick toe poke from the outside of her right foot that snuck by the outstretched Hokies’ goalkeeper to extend the Irish lead to 2-0.
Shortly after, Chukwu would draw a penalty in the box as Engle converted on the penalty kick for a first half brace in the 24th minute. Engle is now 3-3 on penalty kicks this season.
Leading 3-0 heading into the second half, the Irish weren’t done. Engle would go on to cap off her hat trick in the 61st minute as Codd found her on a cross into the box and the sophomore scored on a sliding finish.
Roy capped off the scoring firing in the final goal of the evening as she dribbled her way from the midfield to the top of the box and unleashed a shot with her right foot, finding the back of the net in the bottom left corner in the 66th minute.
The Irish went on to secure the shutout win by a final score of 5-0 for their sixth shutout of the season.
