Notre Dame, Ind. – Senior forward Erich Braun (Frankfurt, Germany) scored all five Notre Dame goals in leading the Irish to a 5-1 victory over Bethel College in an exhibition contest at Alumni Field.
Braun scored two goals in the first half and then added three more in the final 45-minute stanza. Junior midfielder Chad Riley (Houston, Tex.) assisted on two of Braun’s goals, while Greg Martin (Plano, Tex.), Jack Stewart (Torrance, Calif.) Devon Prescod (Marietta, Ga.) and Alan Lyskawa (Novi, Mich.) also added assists.
Braun scored his first goal from two yards out 10:49 into the contest following Riley’s corner kick that was tipped to Braun from Stewart. He then added his second score off an assist from Riley at the 19:02 mark.
Andres Rodriguez trimmed the lead to 2-1 as he tallied the Pilots’ lone goal off an assist from Rafael Perez at the 27:05 mark.
Bethel dominated play early on in the second half. Braun gave the Irish a 3-1 advantage at the 77:38 on a goal assisted by Martin and then scored Notre Dame’s final two goals at the 80:05 and 87:50 marks of the contest.
Sophomore Chris Sawyer (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and senior Greg Tait (Fayetteville, N.Y.) split time in goal. Sawyer started the game and registered three saves in the first half, while Tait made two saves in the second half. Hiram Moreno played the entire game in goal for the Pirates and finished with three saves.
Notre Dame outshot Bethel 17-8 in the game and owned a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Irish will play its final exhibition tuneup on Mon., Aug. 26 at 7:00 p.m. when they play host to Michigan before opening up the season against Southwest Missouri State on Aug. 31 in Omaha, Neb.
