STANFORD, Calif. — The Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing teams are third after the first of four days of the 2000 NCAA combined men’s and women’s fencing championship March 23-26 in Stanford, Calif. After four rounds of women’s epee, foil and sabre, Penn State leads with 60 points, followed by St. John’s with 49 and Notre Dame with 46. The women’s weapons will conclude on Friday, with the men’s weapons to be contested on Saturday and Sunday.

Senior All-American Magda Krol is second in her first appearance in the NCAA women’s foil competition after three top 10 finishes in epee. Krol currently has a 12-2 record for second place, two wins behind first-place Monique de Bruin of Stanford. Irish freshman Liza Boutsikaris is ninth with an 8-6 record.

Notre Dame freshmen Anna Carnick and Meagan Call are 11th and 13th, respectively, after the first day. Carnick has a 7-7 record, while Call is 6-8. Freshmen Natalia Mazur is 7-7 in women’s sabre for 15th place, while junior Carianne McCullough is 17th at 6-8.

The women’s competition concludes on Friday with the last four round and the championship bouts for the top four finishers. The men’s portion of the championship begins Saturday with the first round and concludes with the men’s individual and team champions determined on Sunday.
