Notre Dame, Ind. – Junior midfielder Justin Detter (White Lake, Mich.) scored the game-tying goal off an assist from teammate Devon Prescod (Marietta, Ga.) at the 61:17 mark of the contest as the fifth-ranked Irish (2-0-2) salvaged a 1-1 tie with Cornell (0-0-1) in the second game of the Mike Berticelli Memorial Soccer Tournament.
Notre Dame’s score came less than nine minutes after the Big Red had taken a 1-0 lead on an own goal. Irish rookie Dale Rellas (Plano, Texas) mistakenly tipped in Kevin London’s 15-yard shot in the left corner of the net.
The Irish dominated Cornell in the contest as they outshot the Big Red 20-9 and owned a 12-7 advantage in corner kicks. Notre Dame goalkeeper Chris Saywer (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) made a season-high five saves, while Doug Allan made seven stops for Cornell.
Notre Dame couldn’s capitalize on its scoring chances in regulation and managed just one shot in the two 10-minute overtime sessions. The Irish outshot Cornell 10-3 in the second half leading up to overtime.
In the first game of the tournaemnt, seventh-ranked Furman (3-0-1) and 24th-ranked Bradley (3-0-2) battled to a 0-0 double overtime deadlock.
Tournament action continues on Sun., Sept. 15 when Cornell battles Bradley at 11:00 a.m. and Notre Dame takes on Furman at 1:30 p.m.
