NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Five members of the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team have been named to the 2006 all-Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) first team. Seniors Pat Walsh (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), Brian Hubschmann (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton), Matt Karweck (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy), D.J. Driscoll (Downington, Pa./Malvern Prep) and sophomore Joey Kemp (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) were selected to the team that was announced on Thursday, May 11. The five first-team members were the most of any of the league’s six schools, with Denver being second with four.
Walsh, an attackman, becomes just the second four-time all-GWLL first-team selection in program history. Attackman Chris Dusseau made the team from 1996-99. Walsh is tied for the team lead in points with 47 on 22 goals and a team-high 25 assists. He shares the lead with Hubschmann and the duo rank first in the league for points per game (3.36). Walsh recently moved into second place on Notre Dame’s career scoring list with 189 points and on the career assist chart with 105. The senior ranks 12th nationally by averaging 1.79 assists per game, which is the top-mark in the GWLL. Walsh was named the GWLL Player of the Week earlier this year as he scored a goal and dished out four assists in an 8-7 win over Dartmouth.
Hubschmann, an attackman, has 47 points on a team-best 29 goals and 18 assists. He was a second-team all-league selection in 2004, prior to missing the entire 2005 campaign with a knee injury. Hubschmann is the only Fighting Irish player to collect a point in every game this season and he has a team-high five hat tricks. The senior has notched 10 multiple-goal games this season, including career-high tying four goal efforts against Villanova and Quinnipiac.
Karweck, a midfielder, was named to the second team last year. This season he is third on the team with 25 points on a career-high 20 goals and five assists. He netted his first hat trick of the season in a 19-7 win over Quinnipiac last Saturday. He also added an assist against the Bobcats to tie a season-high with four points. In the GWLL-opener at Butler, he tallied the game-winning goal with 4:16 remaining to give the Irish a 9-8 victory over the Bulldogs.
Driscoll, a defender, is now a four-time all-league member as he collected first-team accolades the past three seasons along with a second-team honor during his freshman campaign in 2003. He was also named the GWLL Defensive Player of the Year last season. Driscoll has been a solid force in the Irish defense that ranks seventh nationally by allowing only 7.21 goals per game. He leads the team with 56 groundballs and also has one assist.
Kemp, a goaltender, ranks ninth nationally in both goals-against average (7.05) and save percentage (.597). Both of those marks rank him first in the league. Kemp garnered GWLL Newcomer of the Year honors last season along with being named to the second team. He has stopped 139 shots on the year, while allowing 94 goals, and is a major reason why the Fighting Irish defense is seventh for goals-against average in the nation.
This marked the fourth time that Notre Dame has placed at least five student-athletes on the all-GWLL first team. The Fighting Irish put a school-record seven on the list during the 2001 season in which the team made its first-ever trip to the Final Four. Notre Dame had six on the team in 1997 and five in 1995.
Collecting major GWLL awards were Denver’s Geoff Snider (Player of the Year), Ohio State’s Joel Delgarno (Newcomer of the Year), and Denver’s Jamie Munro (Coach of the Year). Denver won the league championship with a 5-0 mark.
Notre Dame will face No. 1 Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (ET) in Charlottesville, Va. The 15th-ranked Fighting Irish concluded the regular season with a 10-4 record and a 3-2 mark in the GWLL.
