NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Seniors Quinn Cully (M), Ryan Foley (M), Matt Miller (D) and Sean Rogers (A) have been named team captains for the 2013 University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse season. All four student-athletes are first-time captains for the Fighting Irish.
“We have four strong leaders who have a lot of experience in our program,” said Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan. “All four are poised and confident on the field and they are also strong leaders off the field. It’s nice to have a captain at each position.”
Cully (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) has played in all 47 games during his Fighting Irish career. He has been a valuable member of the stout Notre Dame defense from his short-stick defensive midfielder position. Cully has picked up 26 ground balls and also has a goal and an assist on his resume.
“I’m really excited to be named captain this season along with Matt, Sean, and Ryan,” said Cully. “We have put together a great fall ball season and I look forward to starting my final season this February.”
Foley (Glen Ridge, N.J./Delbarton) was on Notre Dame’s first midfield line last season after starting every game at attack during his sophomore campaign. He has tallied 22 goals, 12 assists and 22 ground balls in 41 career games. Foley notched career-high totals in goals (13) and assists (8) last season.
“It’s a huge honor to serve as one of this year’s team captains,” said Foley. “Having played under such great leaders in past years, there are certainly big shoes to fill and I know all the captains this year look forward to the challenge. We’re excited to have a good balance of young talent and experienced guys this year, which should make for a great season.”
Miller (Warrenton, Va./Notre Dame Academy) received honorable mention All-America honors last season in addition to being a second team all-BIG EAST selection. He started every game at close defense and was instrumental in Notre Dame finishing the season with the top scoring defense in the country (6.31 goals-against average). Miller also had 30 ground balls and one assist during the 2012 campaign.
“I’m honored to be named a captain this year along with Sean, Ryan, and Quinn,” said Miller. “I think we all have learned from past captains and leaders on the team, and are ready to continue the team-first and hardworking culture that has been put in place. We had a good fall and I think that has us poised to make another run in May.”
Rogers (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity) is back for a fifth season in the Fighting Irish attack unit. He has posted team-high goal totals in each of the past two campaigns. Rogers had 22 goals and eight assists last season and was a unanimous first team all-BIG EAST honoree. He has appeared in 48 career games, including 45 starts, and has registered 54 goals, 20 assists and 46 ground balls.
“It’s an honor to be elected captain by my teammates,” said Rogers. “Over the past five years I’ve been a part of some great teams with some special leaders and I’m honored to be joining that group. My goal as a captain is to help this team emulate the success we’ve experienced the past five years and take the next step to a national championship.”
The Fighting Irish went 13-3 last season and won the BIG EAST regular-season title with a 6-0 league record. Notre Dame topped Yale, 13-7, in the first round of the NCAA Championship and then defeated Virginia, 12-10, in the tournament’s quarterfinals. The Irish fell to eventual national champion Loyola, 7-5, in the semifinals. It was Notre Dame’s second national semifinal appearance in the past three seasons.
