NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team sits alone on top of the leader board following day one of the Notre Dame Invitational at the par 72, 6,003-yard Warren Golf Course. The Fighting Irish posted a 617 (311-316) over Saturday’s two rounds of play to lead Bradley by 10 shots and Georgetown by 11. Junior Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) paced the Irish and the rest of the field by carding a one-over par 36-hole total of 145 (72-73). She carries a three-shot lead over Indiana’s Shannon Johnson into Sunday’s third and final round.
Notre Dame led the 17-team field by one-stroke following the day’s first round after carding a 311. The Irish would expand their lead and knock five shots off of their opening 18-hole total to finish the day at 41-over par. This is the season-opening event for the Fighting Irish.
Nakazaki, who will be looking for her second career medalist finish on Sunday, tied for the day’s low round with her even-par mark of 72 in round one. The Hoosiers’ Johnson fired the other 72 on Saturday, also in the first round.
Joining Nakazaki in the top-10 is her freshman teammate Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute). Maunu fired a 155 (80-75) on the day to reside in a tie for eighth. She is playing as an individual entrant and not as a member of the scoring team in her first collegiate event. Another member of Notre Dame’s non-scoring squad is Lauren Gebauer (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), who is currently tied for 15th with a 157 (80-77).
Junior Stacy Brown’s (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) total of 156 (80-76) did count towards the team score and places her in a tie for 11th. Senior co-captain Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) fired a 159 (80-79) and is tied for 21st along with sophomore teammate Jane Lee (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula), who carded rounds of 81 and 78.
