The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team concluded weekend play on Sunday at two separate tournaments. Five Irish players finished competition at the Vredevelt Invitational in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Senior Dougie Barnard (Indianapolis, Indiana) highlighted that quintet as he captured the Flight D singles title with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Xavier’s Gabriel Chaves Araujo. Four Fighting Irish student-athletes wrapped up action at the Crimson Tide Four-in-the-Fall in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama — Sunday marked the third and final day of the Crimson Tide Four-in-the-Fall, which was hosted by the University of Alabama. The doubles portion of the tournament was held Friday and Saturday and singles action concluded Sunday.

In Flight 1 singles action, Notre Dame junior Eric Schnurrenberger (Zug, Switzerland) won his final match, a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Iain Sneddon of Tulane, to finish in seventh place with a 2-2 mark.

Fighting Irish freshman Drew Dawson (Irvine, California) won his final Flight 2 consolation match, a 6-3, 6-2 besting of Illinois’ Brian Page. Dawson notched a 1-2 record (advanced once on a withdraw) during the weekend. Also in Flight 2, fellow Irish freshman Brendon Kempin (Sandy, Utah) fell to Princeton’s Alex Day, 6-1, 6-3, and concluded the event with a 1-3 record.

Notre Dame junior Nicolas Montoya (Scottsdale, Arizona) finished in sixth place in Flight 3 singles after dropping a 7-6(0), 6-3 decision to South Alabama’s Gerhard Gruindelingh. Montoya compiled a 2-2 singles record at the tournament.

Kalamazoo, Michigan — Singles action was held for the second straight day at the Vredevelt Invitational hosted by Western Michigan University. Doubles competition took place on Friday.

Barnard finished the tournament with a 3-0 mark en route to the singles title in Flight D. Fellow Notre Dame senior Michael Fredericka (Warren, Ohio) fell to Western Michigan’s Matt Hamilton, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, in Sunday’s Flight C championship match to conclude the event with a 2-1 record.

Notre Dame’s Eddy Covalschi (Shelby Township, Michigan) and Alex Lawson (Tempe, Arizona) both finished with victories in the Flight A consolation bracket. Covalschi, a sophomore, bested Cleveland State’s Jorg Van Der Vloet, 6-3, 6-1, and Lawson, a junior, took care of Xavier’s Zach Mueck, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3. Both Covalschi and Lawson went 2-1 at the tournament.

In the Flight B consolation final, Fighting Irish senior Billy Pecor (Houston, Texas) was upended by Cleveland State’s Joe VanMeter, 6-4, 6-1, and finished the weekend with a 1-2 record.
