Five former Notre Dame women’s soccer players, the most from any school, currently are among 20 players training with the United States National Team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. The 20-player training camp is slated to run from Oct. 23-31.

The former Irish players at the training camp include defenders Kate Sobrero (Bloomfield Hills, Calif.), Kelly Lindsey (Omaha, Neb.) and Jen Grubb (Hoffman Estates, Ill.), midfielder Shannon Boxx (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene (Gold River, Calif.). Boxx and Grubb are recent callups after strong seasons in the inaugural season of the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) while Beene and Lindsey joined national team veteran Sobrero on the 18-player U.S. squad that competed in the recent U.S. Nike Cup.

Sobrero has appeared in 67 games with the U.S. Women’s National Team and was a starter on the 1999 World Cup championship team.

Beene and Lindsey-who helped the Bay Area CyberRays win the inaugural WUSA title-both spent time in the U.S. under-21 program, with Beene also playing on several u-21 Nordic Cup teams. Both also played on a young U.S. team that won the Australia Cup tournament in January of 2000 and Beene was the winning goalkeeper for the U.S. in its 4-1 win over Germany at the 2001 Nike Cup (games vs. China and Japan were canceled due to the Sept. 11 tragedies).

Grubb has 12 caps and two goals for the full national team, last playing for the U.S. in a 3-1 victory over Finland on Feb. 24, 1999, a match in which she scored.

The camp marks the first national team call-up for Boxx, considered one of the nation’s top young defensive midfielders after a solid season with the WUSA’s San Diego Spirit.
