Notre Dame, Ind. – Two Notre Dame freshmen, Justin Detter (White Lake, Mich.) and Chad Riley (Houston, Texas) made sure that the final home appearance for their six senior teammates was a memorable one as each scored a goal in leading Notre Dame to a 2-0 BIG EAST victory in the regular-season home finale.
The Irish got a goal in each half and thoroughly dominated the contest as they outshot the Mountaineers 19-5 in the contest. With the win, Notre Dame improves to 7-8-1 overall and finishes with a 4-7-0 mark in the league, while the Mountaineers fall to 4-13-1 and 1-9-1 in the BIG EAST.
Notre Dame struck quickly when Detter’s fourth goal of the season got the Irish on the scoreboard four minutes into the contest. He blasted a 20-yarder off assists from Andreas Forstner (Gerlinden, Germany) and Reggie McKnight (Greenville, S.C.).
The Irish scored an insurance goal when Riley tallied his third score of the season 12:12 into the second half when he knocked Dustin Pridmore’s (Dallas, Texas) feed into the right corner of the net.
Notre Dame outshot West Virginia 8-2 in the first half and 11-3 in the final 45-minute stanza. Sophomore goalkeeper Cole Straub (Oakville, Ontario) only had to make five saves in the contest, while two Moutaineer goalies, Kyle Swarts and Chris McKinney, came up with a combined seven saves.
The Irish play their final regular-season home game on Tues., Oct. 31 when they travel to Indianapolis for a 7:30 p.m. contest with IUPUI.
