ATHENS, Ga. – Irish sophomore Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship Wednesday with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Clemson’s Josipa Bek at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
With the win, Frilling improved to 28-10 on the season, while Bek fell to 28-14.
The 16th-ranked Frilling broke a 3-3 tie to take the 6-4 first-set victory, before falling the second set. Frilling was able to rebound in the third set, cruising to the 6-1 win.
Frilling will take on No. 44 Kristi Boxx of Ole Miss Thursday. A two-time all-SEC selection and a conference all-tournament choice this season, Boxx is 15-14 and helped the Rebels advance to the NCAA Round of 16. Boxx defeated Wake Forest’s Martina Pavelec, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round Wednesday.
Frilling will also team with senior Kali Krisik (Arkansas City, Kan.) Thursday to take on North Carolina’s 13th-ranked Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship.
