NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Sophomore Kristy Frilling fell in the second round of the ITA National Indoor Championships Friday, but two members of the Irish squad went 4-0 on the first day of play at the Western Michigan Invitational.
The 20th-ranked Frilling lost to Washington’s No. 16 Venise Chan, 7-5, 6-3, in the second round Friday.
At the Western Michigan Invitational, senior Kali Krisik and junior Kristen Rafael were victorious in both singles and doubles on the first day of play.
Krisik topped Iowa State’s Erin Karonis, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (9), in the first round, while Rafael defeated Iowa State’s Maria Fernanda Macedo, 6-3, 6-2.
The Irish duo teamed up to knock off Louisville’s Mandy Brown and Jo-Ann Van Aerde, 8-3, in the doubles first round, before toppling Evgeniya Vertesheva and Katya Zapadalova, of Indiana, 8-1, in the second round.
Krisik and Rafael will continue play tomorrow in Kalamazoo.
