CHICAGO — The No. 12/10 Notre Dame football team used a big fourth quarter to take down No. 18/15 Wisconsin 41-13 Saturday afternoon at Soldier Field. The Irish outscored the Badgers 31-3 in the game’s final frame and a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Chris Tyree gave the Irish the lead they did not relinquish.
With the win, Dick Corbett Head Football Coach Brian Kelly surpassed Knute Rockne for most wins all-time in Notre Dame history with 106ˆ.
The defenses dominated the early stages of the game. After Wisconsin hit a field goal on its first possession, the Irish defense forced a three-and-out and then came up with a big fourth down stop for a turnover on downs.
The Irish offense capitalized by scoring its first points of the day on the ensuing possession, as Jonathan Doerer connected on a season-long 51-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3 with 8:44 left in the half.
Cam Hart picked off the first pass of his career on Wisconsin’s next drive to put the Irish at midfield. The Irish capitalized with a five-play, 51-yard scoring drive capped off by a great deep ball from Coan to Austin for the 36-yard touchdown pass to go on top 10-3.
Notre Dame’s defense continued its strong play, by posting back-to-back three and outs to cap off the first half and allow the Irish to take a 10-3 lead into the half.
Wisconsin managed to tie the game on its second drive of the second half, driving 56 yards on four plays to make the score 10-10.
Coan got knocked out of the game with an injury midway through the third quarter and was replaced by Drew Pyne, who led the Irish into Wisconsin territory on his first drive but it stalled and the Irish had to punt.
On Notre Dame’s next possession Pyne was strip sacked and the Wisconsin defense recovered on the Irish 39-yard line. The Irish managed to hold the Badgers to a field goal and Wisconsin took a 13-10 lead in the first minute of the fourth quarter.
The Irish answered immediately, as Tyree took the kickoff 96 yards to the house for his first kick return touchdown of his Notre Dame career to go back on top at 17-13.
The Irish defense came up big on the following possession, as Jayson Ademilola sacked and forced a fumble that was recovered by Isaiah Foskey to give Notre Dame the ball at the Badger 46-yard line.
Notre Dame once again cashed in on the turnover, as Pyne found Austin for a 16-yard touchdown strike to cap off a six-play, 46-yard drive and increase the Irish lead to 24-13 with just under 10 minutes left in the game.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Irish returned two interceptions for touchdowns by Jack Kiser and Drew White. It is the first time since 2002 against Stanford that the Irish had two interceptions returned for a touchdown in the same game.
The Irish return home to Notre Dame Stadium for another ranked showdown, as they take on No. 8/9 Cincinnati at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 2. The game will air on NBC.
