Williams was named an assistant coach for the United State Men’s Basketball team on June 10, 2013. As a member of the 2014-16 USA Basketball Men’s National Team coaching staff, Williams assisted the USA to a 9-0 record and the gold medal at the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. Prior to winning the World title, he helped the 2014 USA National Team compile a 4-0 record during its exhibition tour.
Selected by New York in the first round (24th overall) of the 1994 NBA Draft, Williams was a nine-year veteran of the NBA before chronic knee problems forced him into retirement in 2003. Williams played for New York, San Antonio, Denver, Orlando and Philadelphia. His best season was with the Spurs in 1996-97, when he averaged 9.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 65 games and shot 50.9 percent from the field. In 456 career games, he averaged 6.3 points per game.
Williams began his coaching career as an intern in with the San Antonio Spurs in 2004-05, helping the team to the NBA Championship and coaching the franchise’s summer league team in 2005. He then spent five years as an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers before being named the head coach of the New Orleans Hornets (now the Pelicans) on June 7, 2010. Williams coached the Pelicans for five seasons before moving to the Oklahoma City Thunder as an assistant during the 2015-16 season.
USA BASKETBALL CAREER RECAP: Was a member of the 1993 United States Under-22 National Team that won the world championship … averaged 5.8 points and 3.5 rebounds per game as the United States went 8-0 to win the gold medal … top performance was a 14-point, nine-rebound effort vs. Angola … scored six points vs. France in the championship game.
NOTRE DAME CAREER RECAP: Williams was an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American pick in 1993-94 after leading the Irish in scoring (22.4) and rebounding (8.2) for the year … at the time of his graduation, was the 12th-leading scorer in Notre Dame history with 1,371 career points … scored in double figures 63 of 85 career games, including 28 of 29 his senior season … led the Irish in scoring (18.5) and rebounding (9.3) in 1992-93 … scored a career-high 42 points on 17 of 24 shooting vs. Valparaiso on Nov. 28, 1993 … was sidelined for the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons after a routine exam on Sept. 4, 1990 revealed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a rare but potentially dangerous condition featuring a thickened muscle between the chambers of the heart … was medically cleared to return to the team on Sept. 7, 1992.
