NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Notre Dame men’s soccer team suffered its fourth consecutive loss as the Irish were beaten 3-1 by Georgetown in the regular season home finale at Alumni Field. Three different Hoyas scored in the contest as Georgetown snapped its own two-game losing streak.
Notre Dame, which had beaten Georgetown by a 2-1 count each of the past two seasons, fell to 8-8-2 overall and 4-5-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Hoyas improve to 9-7-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the league.
Georgetown jumped on the Irish quickly when Jeff Boehling netted the game’s first goal when he headed in Kevin Shaw’s corner kick from five yards out 1:45 into the contest.
The score remained that way until the 66:31 mark of the contest when Mert Incekara picked up a deflection off Irish goalkeeper Gerick Short (Mobile, Ala.). Shaw had the first shot on goal from the right corner off a fee from Kenny Owens.
Notre Dame closed the gap to 2-1 when Connor LaRose (Claremont, Calif.) blasted a shot from outside the top of the box. Matt Rosso (Churchville, Pa.) set up the goal when his corner kick from the right side rebounded off two Georgetown defenders back to LaRose.
The fourth third goal of the half, and the final score of the game, was put in by Georgetown’s Truls Engebretsen who nine-yard shot into the left corner of the net past Short at 85:53. The goal came right in front of the net after Engebretsen received the cross from the right side of the field by Khary Robinson.
Notre Dame, which entered the game eighth in the BIG EAST regular season standings, travels to Seton Hall on Wednesday, November 3 for a 1:00 p.m. contest. It is the final regular-season matchup for both teams. The game was originally supposed to be played on September 17, but was postponed due to inclement weather conditions in the Northeast.
