Guiliano punches ticket to World Aquatics Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Talk about shocking the world.

On Tuesday, Notre Dame swimmer Chris Guiliano took second in the 100 freestyle at the Phillips 66 USA National Championships with a best time of more than a second (47.98). In doing so, the rising junior punched his ticket to the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Guiliano entered the meet seeded 22nd with a time of 49.17, and he broke the school record in prelims with a time of 48.17. The Pennsylvania native provided some outside smoke from Lane 1 in the final heat, finishing just 0.05 seconds behind first place. The A Final results were separated by 0.49.

The meet in Japan will begin July 14 and go until July 30. It is Guiliano’s first time representing Team USA after a breakout sophomore year in South Bend that included an ACC title in the 200 freestyle.

Guiliano has two more events to swim in Indianapolis. He will compete in the 200 freestyle on Wednesday and the 50 freestyle on Saturday.

Deuel finished 48th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:18.74, Graves took 36th in the 800 freestyle with a time of 8:51.53, and Pruitt followed behind her with a time of 8:57.61 and a 45th-place finish.
