NOTRE DAME, Ind. – A career-weekend at Wisconsin, backed by his first collegiate hat trick, has earned Notre Dame hockey junior forward Evan Werner Big Ten Third Star of the Week honors. Werner helped the Irish to a conference point Friday night on the road against the No. 13/11 ranked Badgers when he tied the contest up, 5-5, at 18:51 of the third period and force the overtime session.
The late third period goal completed the hat trick for Werner and topped off his career-best tying four-point night after picking up an assist in the game as well. The Flower Mound, Texas, native ranked third nationally in points on the weekend, capping off his milestone trip with a goal in game two of the series to finish the weekend with four goals and one helper for five total points. His five-point weekend led all conference skaters while his four goals in the two game stretch led the nation as he finished as one of just three to accomplish the feat in February’s opening weekend.
Additionally, the junior has routinely contributed on special teams this season as one of the highest producers on the first Irish powerplay unit which has ranked among the nation’s best all season. Werner continued that special teams success over the weekend, leading the team to a success rate of 40-percent as he found the back of the net twice on the team’s five opportunities with the man-advantage at Wisconsin. His two powerplay tallies led the country and gives him six on the season, tied for a team-best with classmate Danny Nelson.
With his five point weekend, Werner now leads the team in points with 28 off 15 goals and 13 assists while averaging 2.00 points per game in his last six contests (6-6-12).
Werner joins Sutter Muzzatti as Irish recipients of Big Ten weekly honors in 2025-26.
The Irish are back in action this weekend as they host Minnesota for a pair of tilts February 13-14. Friday’s game will feature the annual Country Night with puck drop is set for 7pm before a 6pm start on Valentine’s Day.
