Minneapolis, Minn. – Junior #66 Brett Helgeson and senior #30 Sheeva Parbhu of the Notre Dame men’s tennis team posted a pair of wins to reach the round of 16 of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Baseline Tennis Center on Saturday.
Helgeson (Overland Park, KS) registered a pair of three-set victories. He opened the singles draw with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win over Phil Omo of Cleveland State. Helgeson then upended Dara McLaughlin of Indiana, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. He improved to 10-0 on the season. Helgeson advances to face top-seeded Steven Moneke of Ohio State on Sunday at 8:00 a.m.
Parbhu (Omaha, NE) defeated Viktor Maksimcuk of Louisville, 6-2, 7-6. He then beat JP Ritchie of Iowa in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Parbhu now stands 4-3 on the season.
Senior Andrew Roth (Houston, TX), freshman Tyler Davis (Nashville, TN) and freshman David Anderson (Sandwich, MA) each picked up victories, but fell short of the round of 16. Roth had little trouble with Ben Hartman of DePaul, 6-3, 6-2, but was not as fortunte against Austen Childs of Louisville. Childs was victorious, 6-3, 6-2.
Davis breezed past Juan Gomez of Northwestern, 6-1, 6-4, but lost to Bart Van Monsjou of Iowa, 6-0, 6-0. Anderson beat Nick Boulieris of Marquette, 6-1, 7-5, but then dropped a 6-4, 7-6 decision to Jeremy Sonkin of Wisconsin.
Both of the Notre Dame doubles’ teams that reached the round of 16 dropped their respective matches on Saturday. Helgeson and junior Santiago Montoya (Austin, TX) lost 8-2 to #7 Drew Eberly and Justin Kronauge of Ohio State. #32 Parbhu and Roth were defeated by Matt Allare and Mike O’Connell of Ohio State, 8-4.
