Hockey Team Battles Ohio State To A 2-2 Tie

Jan. 20, 2001

Box Score

Notre Dame, Ind. – David Inman (Jr., Toronto, Ont.) and Ryan Dolder (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.) scored third period goals and goaltender Kyle Kolquist (Sr., Duluth, Minn.) made 27 saves as Notre Dame and Ohio State battled to a 2-2 tie at the Joyce Center Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 2,721. Jean-Francois Dufour and R.J. Umberger scored for Ohio State.

The tie gives Notre Dame a 5-17-5 overall record and a 3-11-4 mark in CCHA action and moves the Irish into an 11th place tie with Bowling Green in the CCHA standings. Ohio State is now 12-10-2 overall and 9-7-2 in league play.

Ohio State took the first lead of the game via a five-on-three power play. With Matt Van Arkel (Sr., Richton Park, Ill.) and Evan Nielsen (So., Evanston, Ill.) off for holding and cross-checking respectively, Dufour beat Kolquist from high in the slot off a centering pass from Umberger at 9:07 on a shot that snuck through the senior goaltender’s pads.

Notre Dame got the equalizer at 6:07 of the third period when Dolder collected his second shorthanded goal of the season and his career best 12th of the season off some great stickhandling by linemate Dan Carlson (Sr., Edina, Minn.).

With OSU on the attack, Carlson broke up a pass at center and carried the puck into the Buckeye zone. Instead of shooting, he went around the net and flipped a pass to Dolder coming down the slot. Ohio State goaltender Mike Betz tried to intercept the pass, but it went over his stick to Dolder who took the pass and went around Betz and flipped it in the goal.

“That was a big goal for us,” said Irish coach Dave Poulin. “We were able to answer them each time they scored. That line (Carlson, Aaron Gill and Dolder) has been doing it all for us. Danny and Ryan did a great job on the penalty kill and had chances at the end of the second period and then finally scored in the third.”

The goal marked the third consecutive game that Dolder has scored and extended his scoring streak to nine games (6-7-13). Carlson also has a nine-game scoring streak (7-9-15).

Umberger put Ohio State ahead 2-1 at the 11:00 minute mark. The freshman center who is ranked by the NHL as the top U.S. collegiate player, drove around the Notre Dame defense and fired a low wrister between Kolquist’s pads before crashing into the goal. The goal was his tenth of the season.

“That was a big-time goal,” said Poulin.

“He made a great move to get around the defenseman and beat Koly low. The puck went in and out before the goal came off. It was a good goal.”

Again the Irish answered back. David Inman picked up his first goal since Dec. 8 when he fired a rebound shot past Betz for his seventh of the year at 16:31. Some nifty stickhandling by Matt Van Arkel set up the play as he got two shots off coming down the middle. Betz stopped the first, the defense stopped the second, but Inman was in the right place to shovel it over Betz for the final goal of the game.

“David (Inman) and Matt (Van Arkel) did a great job on that play. We need for those guys to provide us some offense and tonight they came through with a big goal,” commented Poulin.

From there, Betz and Kolquist took over trading saves in the final moments as both teams had excellent scoring chances that were stopped.

Kolquist, playing his fifth strong game in goal this season, made 27 saves in the game. He is still searching for his first career victory. Betz made 32 stops for Ohio State.

“It was a heck of a college hockey game tonight. I think the fans really got their money’s worth,” said Poulin.

“We got some quality shots and some rebounds which we haven’t been getting. I thought Kyle was terrific in goal. He has really earned his shot in our rotation. We are better than our record shows. We just haven’t played well. I’d like to play tomorrow if I could. We just have to keep trying to get better and finish strong our last 12 games.”

Notre Dame returns to action this week when the Irish travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. on Tues., Jan 23 to meet the Wolverines in a 7:05 game. The Irish will play nine of their final 12 games on the road this season.
