NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Senior goalkeeper Kirk Howell (Nashville, Tenn.) was named the Great Western Lacrosse League Player of the Week for his performance in Notre Dame’s 10-4 win at home against Penn State on February 27 in the season opener.
The second-year Irish starter had a career-high 18 saves in the contest as Notre Dame held the Nittany Lions to just one goal for nearly three quarters. After Penn State jumped out to 3-1 lead with 13:13 left in the second quarter, the Irish scored eight unanswered goals and shut down the Nittany Lions until the fourth quarter when they tallied their final goal with 3:04 remaining in the contest.
Howell started all 14 games in 1999 leading the Irish to an 8-6 record. He allowed 118 goals in those contests and made 165 saves. He registered a .577 save percentage and 8.37 goals against average in his first year as Notre Dame’s starting goalie.
