Box Score

New Haven, Conn. – Yale University senior center Jeff Hamilton scored two goals and added three assists while linemate Benn Stafford added a pair of goals and two assists as the Bulldogs handed the Notre Dame Fighting Irish an 8-2 loss in front of 5,110 fans at the New Haven Coliseum Saturday afternoon.

The loss, the second consecutive for Notre Dame, drops the Fighting Irish to 5-19-5 on the year while Yale improves to 10-8-0 for the season.

As has been the case in the two losses this week, the Irish fell behind quickly and never had a chance to get untracked.

“It was just like Michigan, they score the first one early and we never really got in the game after that,” said head coach Dave Poulin following the game.

“We review it, we talk about it, we address it in practice and it happens again. We will just keep on going and try to get back on track.”

The Bulldogs, playing at the downtown Coliseum for the first time in 17 years, came out flying. Yale peppered Irish goaltender Tony Zasowski(So., Darien, Ill.) with 13 shots (scoring twice) in the first 7:52 of the game before Notre Dame got a shot on Bulldog goaltender Dan Lombard.

Hamilton, the Bulldogs senior All-America candidate, got Yale on the board first at 3:27 as he tucked a rebound past Zasowski for his 12th of the season. At that point, the Irish had been outshot 7-0.

Yale made it 2-0 (while running the shots on goal to 13-0) at 7:52 of the first period when right wing Peter Toomey converted a cross-rink, centering pass from left wing Jason Noe and redirected it past Zasowski for his second goal of the season.

The Irish finally got a shot on goal with 11:15 left in the first and almost scored. Jon Maruk’s (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) shot from the top of the right wing circle was stopped by Lombard but the rebound came to Ryan Dolder (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.) who’s shot was stopped by the junior goaltender.

Hamilton and linemate Ben Stafford combined for the Bulldogs third goal at 9:44 as Stafford wristed Hamilton’s centering pass past Zasowski for his 12th of the season.

Notre Dame finally got its skating legs late in the period and scored via the power play at 14:59 when Rob Globke (Fr., West Bloomfield, Mich.) deflected Brett Lebda’s (Fr., Buffalo Grove, Ill.) wrist shot from the left point for his 10th of the season. Yale outshot the Irish 19-6 in the first period.

The second period saw Yale add three more goals before the Irish answered back. The Bulldogs made it 4-1 at 7:40 when Stafford, parked behind the Notre Dame net, found Hamilton cruising down the slot. The 5-10 center one-timed a wrister past Zasowski for his second of the game and 13th of the season.

Freshman defenseman Jeff Dwyer upped the lead to 5-1 at 12:11 on the power play when his long shot from the left point found the back of the Irish net with the man-advantage. For Dwyer, it was his third of the season.

Right wing Dennis Nam made the score 6-1 at 14:39 with his first of the season when he beat Zasowski from the top of the crease before the Irish got on the board again.

Two minutes later, right wing Michael Chin (So., Urbana, Ill.) picked up his second assist of the game when he found David Inman (Jr., Toronto, Ont.) at the bottom of the right wing face-off circle. Inman wasted little time as his wrist shot beat Lombard low to the ice for his eight of the season at 16:46.

Yale added two more goals in the third period for the final 8-2 verdict. Center Luke Earl got his sixth of the year at 12:31 and Hamilton set up Stafford for his second goal of the game, a power play goal at 18:12. Hamilton and Stafford combined with linemate Nick Deschenes for four goals and eight assists in the game.

The Bulldogs outshot the Irish 43-25 in the game. Zasowski finished with 34 saves on the afternoon while Lombard had 23 for Yale.

The Irish played without the services of freshman center Aaron Gill (Fr., Rochester, Minn.) who injured his back on Friday when he fell on campus prior to the Irish trip to Connecticut. Gill, Notre Dame’s third leading scorer coming into the weekend, is listed as day-to-day.

Yale is now 5-4-3 in games played at the Coliseum. The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon at Yale’s Ingalls Rink. Face-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
