INSIDE THE GAME: #3 Notre Dame 92, Ferris State 32 (exhibition)
Nov. 5, 2014 – Purcell Pavilion
It Was Over When: The Fighting Irish scored the first 28 points of the night and held Ferris State scoreless for the opening 9:48 of the game.
Game Ball Goes To: Notre Dame junior All-America guard Jewell Loyd, who had a workmanlike 20 points on a near-perfect nine of 10 shooting. She also added eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks in only 16 minutes of action.
Stat Of The Game: With the win, the Fighting Irish improved to 35-1 in exhibition games dating back to the 1993-94 season. The mark includes an active 30-game winning streak.
Unsung Hero: She probably won’t qualify for this category for much longer, but freshman forward Brianna Turner tallied a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) in her first (unofficial) collegiate action. She also ran the floor as well as anyone in the building, often times starting the offense by dribbling up the court herself after a defensive rebound.
Unofficial Play Of The Game: As they’ve done in many games over the last couple of years, the Fighting Irish quickly claimed the opening tip, raced down the court and struck first on a Jewell Loyd lay-up off a pass from sophomore forward Taya Reimer just four seconds into the contest. The play started a 28-0 Notre Dame run to open the game.
Up Next For The Fighting Irish: Notre Dame opens the regular season at 6 p.m. (ET) Nov. 14 when it plays host to UMass Lowell. It will be the first meeting between the two schools in women’s basketball.
