Inside The Game: Miami 78, #4 Notre Dame 63
January 8, 2015 – Coral Gables, Florida (BankUnited Center)
It Was Over When: Miami’s Laura Quevedo connected on a three-pointer from the right wing with 8:02 remaining and just four seconds left on the shot clock. Notre Dame had trimmed a 22-point second-half deficit to 55-49 and had all the momentum on its side, but Quevedo’s three-pointer blunted the Fighting Irish rally and Notre Dame couldn’t get closer than nine points the rest of the night.
Game Ball Goes To: Miami’s Adrienne Motley scored a game-high 32 points on 13 of 19 shooting, including eight points in the Hurricanes’ 20-4 run to end the first half. Motley also scored 13 of Miami’s first 15 points in the second half, keeping the hosts in front in the face of Notre Dame’s valiant comeback.
Unsung Hero: Despite a two for 10 shooting night, Notre Dame freshman forward Kathryn Westbeld contributed in other ways, finishing with five points, eight rebounds and a career high-tying four assists in 24 minutes of action.
Unofficial Play of the Game: Just 69 seconds after Quevedo’s three-pointer, Notre Dame had clawed within 60-51 and seemingly had Miami locked down on the ensuing possession. However, UM guard Nigia Greene bailed her team out and simultaneously deflated the hard-charging Fighting Irish, banking in a desperation jumper just before the shot clock expired, pushing the Hurricanes’ lead back to double figures. It was Greene’s lone basket of the night.
Stat Of The Game: Notre Dame saw its NCAA Division I record-tying 30-game road winning streak come to an end, as the Fighting Irish lost a road game for the first time since March 6, 2012, a 63-54 setback at Connecticut in the BIG EAST Conference Tournament championship game. Coincidentally, the Fighting Irish end up as a co-holder with Connecticut for the NCAA Division I record for consecutive road wins, the Huskies having won 30 in a row from Feb. 9, 2008 to Dec. 28, 2010.
Additional Notes: The Fighting Irish saw their 61-game winning streak against unranked opponents (according to the Associated Press poll) and their 38-game conference regular season winning streak both stopped — the last loss prior to both streaks was a 65-63 setback to then-BIG EAST foe West Virginia on Feb. 12, 2012, at Purcell Pavilion … Notre Dame also had its 25-game regular season conference road winning streak snapped, suffering its first league loss on the road since Feb. 28, 2011, a 70-69 BIG EAST loss at No. 12/11 DePaul … the Fighting Irish lost by double digits to an unranked opponent for the first time since March 8, 2009, when they fell 58-47 to Villanova in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals at Hartford, Connecticut … Thursday marked Notre Dame’s largest loss to an unranked opponent since Nov. 16, 2006 (75-49 at Penn State) … the Fighting Irish fall to 32-6 (.842) all-time against Florida schools, including a 19-3 (.864) record away from home, with Thursday’s loss snapping Notre Dame’s 12-game winning streak against teams from Florida (last defeat was an 87-78 overtime setback at South Florida on Jan. 13, 2007 … Notre Dame falls to 15-4 all-time against Miami, with the Hurricanes earning their first series win over the Fighting Irish since Jan. 11, 2003 (80-70 at Purcell Pavilion), and their first series victory in Coral Gables since Feb. 3, 1998 (77-76 at UM’s previous home, the Knight Sports Complex) … junior guard Jewell Loyd moved into a tie for 13th place on the Fighting Irish career scoring list with 1,492 points, drawing even with Ashley Barlow (2006-10) — Loyd needs eight points to become the 13th Notre Dame player to score 1,500 career points, and should she do it in her next outing (her 90th career game), she would be just the second Fighting Irish player to hit that milestone in 90 games or less (current associate coach Beth Cunningham scored her 1,500th career point in her 80th game) … Loyd scored in double figures for the 59th consecutive game, the second-longest streak in program history … Loyd posted her 11th 20-point game of the season, and her sixth 25-point outing (second in a row) … freshman forward Brianna Turner notched her third career double-double (all in the past four games) … sophomore guard Lindsay Allen registered at least six assists for the third game in a row and sixth time this season.
