Irish 11-5 In Singles On Day 2 Of Mini Duals

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The longest day of the Fighting Irish Mini Duals event is in the books as each competitor played 2 singles and a doubles match. Play started with the second round of singles before the third round of doubles and singles for the weekend followed. The Irish went a combined 11-5 in singles with 9 of those matches going to third-set tiebreaks. Of the 9 split set matches, the host team would win 7 of those contests.

Jamie Corsillo has not lost a set in singles all weekend, winning both his matches on Saturday in straight sets over Ohio State and Michigan. Brian Bilsey also won both his matches on the day in straight sets over Ohio State and Northwestern. Chase Thompson was the other player to go 2-0 on Saturday in singles, adding to his singles win on Friday, but his matches on the middle day would be more tightly contested. In the first match of the day, he would save 5 match points and win against Michigan State 6-2, 6-7(7), 1-0(14) in the longest match of the tournament. Later in the day, he would win 6-4, 6-4 against Louisville.

All of the other Irish players picked up a win in singles as well and all would go to third set tiebreaks. Kyran Magimay and Jayanth Devaiah each picked up three-set wins against Michigan State and Ohio State respectively. Yu Zhang came from a set down and a 5-1 deficit in the third set to claim his victory against Michigan. And Luis Llorens defeated Wisconsin in his opening match of the day before falling in another 3-setter to Michigan State.

In the only round of doubles on the day, the Irish went 2-2 with victories from Corsillo and Zhang against Michigan and Devaiah and Bilsey against Northwestern.

Sunday will be the final day of play with everyone playing a singles match. If the duo splits the matches, the doubles match will be played to determine the winner. All play will be inside the Eck Tennis Pavilion to complete the event.
