EVANSTON, Ill. – The Notre Dame women’s tennis team had another successful day at the Midwest Regional Championships Saturday as the Irish advanced to the late rounds in both singles and doubles play.
The 15th-ranked Irish doubles duo of sophomore Kristy Frilling and senior Kali Krisik earned a spot in the quarterfinals with an 8-4 victory over Iowa’s Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Sonja Molnar. Frilling and Krisik will face Ohio State’s Kelsey Haviland and Cami Hubbs Sunday at 10 a.m. (CT).
In singles action, Krisik and Frilling advanced to the Round of 16. After earning a first-round bye, Krisik topped Akron’s Angelika Jogasuria, 6-2, 6-3. She will take on Northwestern’s top-ranked Maria Mosolova Sunday.
The 20th-ranked Frilling faced Illinois’ Marisa Lambropoulos in the Round of 32 after receiving a first-round bye. Frilling cruised to a 6-2 victory in the first set, before clinching the win with a 6-3 triumph in the second. Frilling will face Northwestern’s Brittany Wowchuk in the Round of 16.
Junior Kristen Rafael defeated Marquette’s Kelly Barry, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4), in the first round, before battling Illinois’ No. 42 Megan Fudge to three sets in her second match. Fudge won the first set, 7-6, but Rafael took the second, 7-6, to force a third set, eventually falling 6-2.
