Notre Dame will face Santa Clara in the third round of the NCAA Championship on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. (PT). Notre Dame is seeded 10th in this year’s tournament, while Santa Clara is the seventh seed. This will be the third meeting all-time between the Fighting Irish and the Broncos and the first since 1998. LAST TIME OUT: A three-point performance from Joseph Lapira propelled 10th-seeded Notre Dame to a 2-1 victory over Oakland in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at a cold and windy Alumni Field … Notre Dame controlled possession throughout the majority of the first half … the Fighting Irish cracked the scoring column in the 36th minute as Lapira sent a low cross to the far post for Alex Yoshinaga and the senior midfielder deposited his third goal of the season … the Irish out shot the Golden Grizzlies 8-2 in the opening half and would take the one- goal lead into the intermission … the Notre Dame offense struck again in the 57th minute when senior defender Ryan Miller sent a cross in from the right side that Lapira tapped in to make it a two-goal advantage for the hosts … Oakland would not go down without fight … the Golden Grizzlies upped the offensive pressure towards the later stages of the second stanza and it paid off in the 66th minute as Endre Osnes gathered the ball near the top of the 18-yard box and scored to cut the Notre Dame lead in half … Osnes nearly connected on another goal with just over 17 minutes remaining yet his shot hit off the near post … the Irish defense would hold on to preserve the victory … senior goalkeeper Chris Cahill made four saves for Notre Dame, while his counterpart Steve Clark also had four stops … Notre Dame out shot Oakland 14-11 for the match, while the Fighting Irish produced six more corner kicks (7-1) than the Golden Grizzlies.

LAPIRA NAMED A M.A.C. HERMANN TROPHY SEMIFINALIST: Joseph Lapira has been named a semifinalist for the 2007 Missouri Athletic Club (M.A.C.) Hermann Trophy … the trophy is presented annually to the top men’s soccer player in the United States … Lapira won the award last season as he led all NCAA Division I men’s players with 22 goals and 50 points … he became the first Notre Dame men’s player to receive the award … a panel of coaches from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) compiled the list of 15 semifinalists … Lapira will try to become the first back-to-back recipient of the most prestigious award in college soccer since Virginia’s Claudio Reyna took home the Hermann Trophy in 1992 and 1993 … the trophy winner will be announced on January 11, 2008.
