NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Irish fans: University of Notre Dame women’s lacrosse is coming to a town near you this winter! Head coach Christine Halfpenny and her staff are heading to Greenfield, Mass., (December 8) and Atlanta, Ga., (December 21-22) for their annual Attack the Pipes Girl’s Lacrosse Camp.
“Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in high school and college in the country,” said Halfpenny. “We as a staff are excited to help expand the game of women’s lacrosse by hosting camps around the country that offer young girls a chance to learn more about the game and improve their skill set while bringing it conveniently to a location near them.
“We take a lot of pride in hitting the regions of the country that are booming with young athletes that are excited about learning more about the fastest game on two feet.
The Attack the Pipes clinic in Greenfield, Mass., is first on the docket and will take place at Indoor Action Sports on 1385 Bernardston Rd., Sunday, Dec. 8. The clinic is made up of two sessions, one that emphasizes individual skills and another that covers situational play. Each session is $60 and participants must register and pay online prior to the event.
The first session is on individual skills and runs from 9-11:30 a.m. It’s open to girls of all skill levels that are in grades 7-12. Skills covered during the two hour, 30 minute session will include shooting, faking, checking, ground balls, stick skills and draw control and will also show participants shooting and faking workouts in addition to wall ball.
Greenfield’s second session emphasizes small-sided situational play and runs from 1-3:30 p.m. This session is open girls of all skill levels that are in grades 9-12. It will include coaching on man-up and man-down opportunities, team offense and defense and crease offense and defense. This session will also feature a 5-on-5 tournament.
The second clinic is set for Cambridge High School (2845 Bethany Bend, Milton, GA 30004) in Milton, Ga., which is about 30 miles outside of Atlanta, the weekend of Dec. 21-22.
The two-day clinic is $250 per participant and is open to all girls in grades 9-12, with campers being grouped according to skill level. It will feature coaches from Notre Dame, Georgetown and Duke along with 2009 and 2013 World Cup gold medal-winning goalie Meg Huether. Huether, who is entering her first season as a volunteer assistant goalies coach for Johns Hopkins, will have a separate instruction and skill sessions from the rest of the position players. Goalies will get to participate in small game situations and full-field play throughout the two days in addition to feedback from Huether.
Saturday’s session is set to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Sunday lasting from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Skills emphasized during the two days will be individual play, small strategy and game-like situations with a camp tournament set to take place Sunday.
Participants in both clinics should bring their stick, goggles, mouth guard, water bottle and shoes for field turf surface and goalies should bring all their usual equipment including pads and helmet.
Youth interested in either camp should have a parent or guardian register them at the official Attack The Pipes website atplacrosse.com, which has all forms and information readily available.

The Irish wrapped up their 2013 fall season Thursday with a 13-3 victory over Marquette. Notre Dame is coming off a 12-5 season that resulted in a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and produced a first team All-American in defender Barbara Sullivan.
