NOTRE DAME, Ind. — It’s been over a month since the Notre Dame track and field teams competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, but the Irish are still on the run. Several men and women of the Notre Dame squads have competed on the national stage over the course of the summer.
USA Outdoor Championships – June 26-29 – Sacramento, Calif.
Four Notre Dame student-athletes competed against America’s best track and field athletes at the USA Outdoor Championships June 26-29 in Sacramento, Calif. Rising senior Chris Giesting (46.04) and recently-graduated Patrick Feeney (46.08) ran together in the men’s 400m dash, with rising junior Margaret Bamgbose (52.72) and recently-graduated Michelle Brown (52.69) competing in the women’s 400m. All four athletes advanced from the preliminaries to the semifinals of their events.
Three former Notre Dame athletes-Mary Saxer (pole vault), Molly Huddle (5,000m) and Rebecca Tracy (1,500m, 4:18.71)-also competed at the championships.
Huddle, an American record holder, was the winner of the 5,000m, marking her second victory at the USA Track and Field Championships. She led for most of the race, was passed on the finishing straight by fellow Olympian Shannon Rowbury, but gathered herself and repassed Rowbury at the end for the win and a time of 15:01.56. USA Outdoor Junior Championships – July 5-6 – Eugene, Ore.
Rising sophomore Harvey Smith was amongst more than 300 collegiate athletes competing in the two-day USA Outdoor Junior Championships in Eugene, Ore., July 5-6. Smith placed 14th in the preliminary round of the men’s 400m dash with a time of 48.49.
During his freshman campaign with the Irish, Smith was named an All-American for helping Notre Dame to an eighth place finish in the 4x400m relay at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
