NOTRE DAME, Ind. – On an afternoon when it honored its two seniors for their four years with the program, the University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team cruised to a 5-2 victory over Miami at a windy Courtney Tennis Center.
Playing outdoors at home for the first time this season, the Irish won the doubles point and three of the first four singles decisions to upend the Hurricanes. After the match, the Irish celebrated seniors Drew Dawson and Brendon Kempin, who are appearing at home for the final time this weekend.
How It Happened
The Irish (14-11, 5-4 ACC) and Hurricanes (12-9, 3-6 ACC) split the first two doubles decisions, with Notre Dame’s Grayson Broadus and Richard Ciamarra winning 6-4 on Court 3 and Miami taking the match on Court 2. At the top, Kempin and freshman Tristan McCormick played 18th-ranked Christian Langmo and Adria Siriano to a tiebreaker, pulling away in the extra session to win 7-6(4) and secure the doubles point for the Irish.
The Irish won first sets on four courts to start singles, including two of the three that went to tiebreakers. With the apparent advantage, Notre Dame got the first singles decision, as Broadus extended the lead by swiftly defeating Tatsuki Shimamoto 6-1, 6-1 on Court 6.
Miami got one back on Court 4 as Bojan Jankulovski defeated Matt Gamble, but an entertaining match on Court 2 yielded a 6-2, 6-4 win for Ciamarra over No. 97 Soriano to put the Irish ahead 3-1. McCormick sealed the victory in an emphatic 7-6, 6-1 win over Niclas Genovese at the No. 5 spot.
Rain forced the conclusion of the final two matches indoors, with each going to 10-point tiebreakers. Miami’s Dane Dunlap came out on top at the No. 3 spot, defeating sophomore Guillermo Cabrera 6-7, 6-4, 10-6. Lebedev showed poised at No. 1, however, as the 36th-ranked junior weathered a challenge from No. 118 Langmo and delivered a 6-7(5), 6-4, 12-10 victory.
Coach Ryan Sachire Says
On another complete team effortââ’¬¦
“Our guys really battled and overcame a lot this week. A number of them have been out at various points, so it wasn’t an ideal situation leading up to the match. So to play Miami outdoors, where they’re very comfortable, and to clinch the match outdoors I think was very significant. I was really proud of everybody up and down the line. All ACC wins are good wins and Miami is a good program and they compete really hard, so I was really proud that we were able to get the job done today.”
On the team’s status as the season winds downââ’¬¦
“I think we’re a good team. We’re a capable team and play a lot of close matches, but we can’t take a lot for granted because we don’t have a ton of margin over the opponents we’re playing, but we’re in every single match. When you walk (into a match) with a chance to be successful, that’s a good feeling to have and I think we have that.”
On the impact of the 2018 senior classââ’¬¦
“Drew and Brendon have been great team guys, great people, great representatives of our program and great representatives of Notre Dame. They’ve done a lot on the court and just as much off the court. I’m really proud to have had them as part of the program over the last four years and hopefully they will continue to be part of the program moving forward.”
