Player Leaderboard (Round One)
JOHN’S ISLAND, S.C. – No. 23 University of Notre Dame women’s golf team concluded the first round of the Briar Creek Invitational on the Golf Club at Briar’s Creek’s par-72 course with 29-over-par 317 to finish in seventh place. The Irish moved up to a three-way tie for first through 12 holes played in the second round of the planned 36-hole day before action was suspended due to inclement weather.
Play will resume tomorrow (Tuesday, March 26) at 8:15 a.m. to finish the remaining holes of today’s second round before teams commence with the third round in an effort to complete the 54-hole tournament.
Coastal Carolina’s Brittany Henderson finished the first round with a one-under-par 71, followed by teammate Jessica Alexander who shot a 72.From the efforts of Henderson and Alexander, the Chanticleers concluded the first round in first place with a 17-over-par 305 followed by Central Florida who carded a 19-over-par 307 to land in second.
“The weather conditions today were really against us and made play quite difficult,” says head coach Susan Holt. “We made a nice run to start the second round and will need to continue with this effort tomorrow in order to move up the leaderboard where we should be.”
Despite a tough first round, the Irish nevertheless shot under the field’s stroke average of 81.4 through the opening 18 holes with an eight-over-par 80 collectively as a team.
Ashley Armstrong matched her best first-round score on the year for the third time this season with a two-over-par 74 to tie for fourth place. Through 12 holes in the second round Armstrong currently sits in third-place on the leaderboard with a one-over-par 50.
The sophomore was strong through the opening nine holes in both rounds on the day making par in eight of nine holes. Armstrong has currently matched her first round effort through the 12 holes played in the second round with two bogeys and a birdie for a one-over-par score.
Freshman Talia Campbell finalized the first round with a seven-over-par 79 to tie for 27th. Through 11 holes in the second round, Campbell is currently tied for seventh with a one-under-par 44.
Campbell fell into a rough stretch during the first round from holes 5-12 shooting a six-over-par in that span, but rebounded with a superb effort in the second round during the same holes firing back with a three-under-par. Campbell caught fire in the second round from hole four through 10 with four birdies staying under par by four strokes. Campbell currently leads the Notre Dame roster on the day with six birdies.
Lindsey Weaver wrapped up the first round with an eight-over-par 81 to land in 43rd place. After 12 rounds played in the second round, the freshman has risen to 31st-place on the leaderboard with a three-over-par 52. Weaver found par in five of nine holes on the front nine in both rounds and improved by two stokes during the second round after birdieing the par four on hole eight. After a birdie on the par four on hole eight, the freshman has shot an even par from holes eight to 12.
Kelli Oride tied for 62nd place after shooting an 11-over-par 83 during the introductory round. The sophomore as advanced to 31st place through 10 holes played in the second round shooting a one-over-par 43.
The sophomore achieved two birdies and pared five holes in the second round compared to the four holes pared and the single birdie gathered during the first 18 holes. After shooting three double bogeys during the first round, Oride has yet to shoot one in the second round.
Oride has shown great improvement while advancing in the second round as she has fired a one-over-par through her first five holes of the second round compared to her six-over-par start in the first round. Switching to the back nine, Oride is one-under-par through holes 10-12 after picking up a birdie on the 430-yard par five.
Kristina Nhim turned in her first round scorecard with an 11-over-par 83 to tie for 62nd place. The junior is currently in 67th place through 11 holes with a six-over-par 51. Nhim stayed even par though holes 7-10 during the first round and pared six of nine on the front nine. Nhim has caught stride in the second round after shooting one-over-par from holes nine thru 12.
