Chestnut Hill, MA– Notre Dame men’s tennis secured the 5-0 sweep over Boston College on Friday morning on the road. The match was originally slated for 12 p.m. ET at Boston College but was changed last minute to 10:30 a.m. ET at the Cedarhale Health and Fitness Club in Haverhill, MA. The BC sweep increases Notre Dame’s record against BC to 9-0 overall, 7-0 under Coach Sachire’s reign. Friday’s victory also marks the 5th Irish sweep over the Eagles.
“Our team performed well today. The attitude and vibe of our group was fantastic all week, and that led to a strong performance today," stated Head Coach Ryan Sachire. "I am especially proud of the competitive leadership that we are consistently getting at the top of our lineup with Richie, Axel, and Tristan.”
DOUBLES
To kick things off, Tristan McCormick and Axel Nefve secured a 6-3 victory on Court 1 over Derek Austin and Javi Amantegui. Matt Che and Paul Gota followed suit as they claimed the second doubles match 6-2 over BC’s Mason Fung and Sean Mullins. Richard Ciamarra and Matt Gamble were mid-battle with their competitors as the match was stopped due to the Irish clinching 2 out of 3 doubles matches and earning the doubles point.
SINGLES
The Irish aimed to keep up the winning momentum as they entered singles play with the 1-0 lead over BC.
Tristan McCormick quickly claimed the first singles point as he defeated Max Motlagh 6-2, 6-2 on Court 3. Court 2 was the next matchup to finish as Axel Nefve dominated his BC competition, Javi Amantegui, with a 6-0, 6-3 win. Richard Ciamarra was the third to completed a singles match after beating Derek Austin 6-3, 6-4. At this point in time, the Irish have improved the lead to 3-0 over BC until Matt Che clinched the final singles match. Che beat Alexander Chieffalo 6-1, 6-1 on Court 6 and propelled the Irish to an ACC road victory. Connor Fu was in the lead 6-2, 4-2 over Max Mendelsohn and Matt Gamble was up 6-3, 1-3 over Sean Mullins when the matches were halted due to the Irish claiming the 5-0 clinch victory.
No singles or doubles sets required a tiebreaker and all singles matches were won within two sets during the BC battle.
UP NEXT
The Irish are on the last leg of their first roadstead of 2020 as they travel to Illinois on February 15 at 12 p.m. ET before finally returning home for three matches the following weekend after almost a month of road matches. The Irish host Ohio State at 12 p.m. and St. Bonaventure at 5 p.m. on February 22 before challenging Michigan the next day, February 23 at 3 p.m. ET.
