MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team closed out the fall season Sunday in the Gopher Invitational at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota.
Featuring a Maroon Draw with a 16-team compass draw and a Gold Draw with two round-robin flights, the Gopher Invitational features linked doubles and singles results to determine who moves on to the next round. In each round, doubles is played first for one point, with each pair breaking off to play singles for two possible points.
After accumulating six points on Friday and Saturday, sophomore Guillermo Cabrera and freshman William Howells fell in the Maroon Draw championship, dropping their doubles match and both singles matches.
Junior Grayson Broadus and freshman Richard Ciamarra defeated Utah’s David Micevski and Egbert Weverink in their doubles match to determine fifth place, but each fell in singles.
In the 13th-place match-up, sophomore Matt Gamble and senior Brendon Kempin collected all three possible points, defeating Eric Morris and Jesse Ruder-Hook 6-2 in doubles, while Gamble downed Morris 6-0, 6-3, and Kempin downed Ruder-Hook in three sets, 6-7(2), 6-2, 10-5.
In the Gold Draw, senior Drew Dawson and sophomore Conor Somers swept Wisconsin’s Darius Mackenzie and Alan Sweet, winning in a walkover at doubles due to an injury to Sweet, while Dawson defeated Mackenze in singles. Also winning at singles were junior Nathan Griffin (6-2, 0-6, 10-8 over Denver’s Jorge Nunez) and freshman Paul Gota (6-3, 3-6, 10-5 over Minnesota’s Kaleb Dobbs) after the pair fell in the doubles match.
The Irish will return to the court following the new year when they open the dual season at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, against Michigan State at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
