Southern Pines, N.C. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team closed out the fall portion of the 2002-03 schedule on Tuesday afternoon by shooting a final-round 323 to finish in a tie for seventh with the University of Minnesota at the Pine Needles Invitational. The Irish compiled a 54-hole total of 941 after Monday’s rounds of 315 and 303 to finish 42 strokes behind tournament winner North Carolina. The Tar Heels closed with the low round of the day – 303 – to finish with an 899 (304-292-303). The tournament was played at the par 71, 6,017-yard Pine Needles Golf Club.
Following North Carolina was second-round leader North Carolina State. The Wolfpack led by three going into Tuesday’s final round, but shot a 314 to finish eight strokes back with a 907 (303-290-314). Baylor University was third with a 919 (300-307-312) followed by Rollins College with a 926 (314-299-313) and the University of Miami with a 929 (316-294-319) to round out the top five teams.
North Carolina had the three top individuals led by medalist Abby Spector who shot a one-over par 72 for the final round to finish with a five-over par 218. One stroke back was teammate Ashley Prange with a 219. The third North Carolina finisher, Meghan Adams, played as an individual entrant and finished two strokes off the pace with a 220. North Carolina State’s Briana Vega was fourth with an 11-over par 224 and Mariana DeBiase of Rollins College and Colby Cobb of N.C. State tied for fifth with 225’s.
For Notre Dame, freshman Sarah Bassett (Spokane, Wash.) was the team’s top finisher for the third time in six fall tournaments. Bassett shot a final-round 77 for a 54-hole total of 231 (79-75-77) that put her 13 strokes behind the leader. The 231 total equalled Bassett’s lowest 54-hole total on the year.
Two strokes behind Bassett was fellow freshman Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash.). Brophy finished with a final round 82 for a 54-hole total of 233 (78-73-82) and a tie for 16th. Her 233-total also equalled her lowest tournament score of the season.
Rebecca Rogers (Jr., Alpharetta, Ga.) closed with an 80 on Tuesday afternoon for a 21-over par 234 that equalled her 54-hole total for the season. Rogers shot rounds of 78 and 76 on Monday and finished in a tie for 22nd-place.
Freshman Lauren Barbir (Montgomery, Texas), playing as an individual entry, tied for 44th after a final round 80. That gave her a three-round total of 244 (81-83-80), cutting five strokes off her previous best 54-hole total.
Terri Taibl (Sr., Elm Grove, Wis.) finished 46th with a 245 (82-79-84) and Shannon Byrne (Jr., Arlington Heights, Ill.) rounded out the Irish contingent with a 51st-place finish as she finished with a 249 (80-81-88).
Notre Dame’s women’s golf team breaks for the remainder of the fall and is scheduled to resume action on Feb. 28, 2003 at the Edwin Watts/Carolina Classis at Pinehurst, N.C.
