Wilmngton, N.C. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team closed the fall portion of the 2011-12 schedule on Sunday afternoon with a 26-over par total of 314 to finish in a tie for 10th at the 10th annual Landfall Tradition Golf Tournament. The Irish finished with a 54-hole total of 70-over par 934 along with Wake Forest and Florida State.
The tournament was played on the par-72, 6,208-yard Jack Nicklaus course at the Country Club of Landfall and was hosted by the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. The tournament featured six of the nation’s top 25 teams with 15 of the 18 squads ranked in the top 50.
Notre Dame finished 30 strokes off the pace set by tournament champion Purdue as the Boilermakers fired a winning total of 304-303-297 for a 904 mark and a 14-stroke win over second-place Auburn with a 918 (297-312-309). Ohio State was a stroke behind the Tigers with a 919 (308-311-300). South Carolina was fourth with a 922, 18 strokes behind Purdue while Iowa State and Michigan State rounded out the top five with 59-over par totals of 923.
The tournament’s individual champion was Purdue’s Paula Reto who won by three strokes over Duke’s Alejandra Cangrejo and Auburn’s Victoria Trapani with a two-over par total of 218. Reto finished nine strokes ahead of the top Irish golfer, senior Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo.), who tied for 10th in the tournament with an 11-over par 227. Huffer shot rounds of 76-78 on Friday and Saturday and closed out the tournament with a 73. In her final 18, Huffer was even or under par for most of the round before bogeying her last two holes to finish at one over par. She was coming off a first-place finish in her last outing on Oct. 18 at the Hoosier Fall Invitational.
Following Huffer with her best finish of the fall was sophomore Kristina Nhim (Cypress, Calif.) who tied for 16th with a 14-over mark of 230. Nhim had two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey for her final round of 77 on Sunday to go with rounds of 76-77 for her 54-hole tournament.
Finishing third among Notre Dame golfers was freshman Kelli Oride (Lihue, Hawaii) who tied for 59th after rounds of 80-79-80 gave her a 23-over par 239.
Fellow freshman Ashley Armstrong (Flossmoor, Ill.) was one stroke behind Oride with a 240 mark after rounds of 74-82-84 and that tied her for 62nd on the weekend.
Notre Dame’s final golfer was senior Katie Allare (Phoenix, Ariz.) who shot an 85 on Sunday after an 80 on Saturday. Her opening round was wiped out due to a disqualification due to an unsigned scorecard.
While finishing in a tie for 10th at the Landfall Tradition, the Irish tied or finished better than six teams that entered the tournament ranked higher than then in the national rankings.
This weekend’s action closed out the fall portion of the schedule for Notre Dame. The Irish will return to action on March 2-4, 2012 when they compete in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by the University of South Carolina at the Long Cove Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
