Irish Complete Undefeated Weekend at DeCicco Duals

NOTRE DAME, Indiana — The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing teams put on another dominant performance in the second and final day of the DeCicco Duals Sunday at the Castellan Family Fencing Center.

The men’s and women’s went undefeated for the second straight day and made quick work of the opposition through seven matches throughout the day. Both squads swept three opponents and did not score less than 20 points in any match on the day.

At the end of the weekend, the men and women both finished with unblemished 14-0 records.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The top-ranked women’s team picked up a sweep over Case Western (27-0) to begin the day. They followed it up with wins over Chicago (21-6), Indiana (25-2), Michigan (23-4) and a sweep of Michigan State (27-0). In the final two matches of the day, the women’s team dropped just one bout and picked up wins over Purdue (26-1) and Wisconsin (27-0).

The second ranked men’s team opened the second day of competition with wins over Case Western (26-1), Chicago (20-7) and Indiana (25-2). Over the final four matches, the men yielded just one bout to Purdue (26-1) while sweeping Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin to end the day undefeated once again.

The women’s foil squad put together a nearly perfect day through seven matches, dropping just a single bout and compiling a 62-1 record on the day. The sabre squad was not far off as they finished the day with a 61-2 record. 10 women reached the double-digit win mark while eight ended the day with an undefeated record.

Sophomore sabreur Sienna Wilson (17-0) and freshman epeeist Victoria Tontcheva (17-1) tied for the most wins with 17. Foilists Beatrice Verrecchia (16-0), Zoe Barnette (15-0) and Solène Watson (15-0) eclipsed the double-digit win category while not dropping a bout.

On the men’s side, the sabre squad led the way with a 61-2 record and the epee squad was right behind with a 60-3 mark for the day. The men also had 10 athletes reach double-digit wins and 10 also finished the day undefeated.

Ben Scholl led the sabre team with a 17-1 record while Logan Kanary and Colin Campbell both finished with 14-0 records. Foilist Alexander Ju (18-3) had the men high in wins with fellow foilist Gustavo Rossello not far behind (16-3). Epeeist Hunter Candreva compiled a 14-1 mark while Michael Siroky and Sebastian Wozniak both finished with 12-0 records.

UP NEXT

The Irish will look to keep the momentum going from this weekend when they travel to Evanston next weekend. The Irish will compete in the Northwestern Duals which gets underway on Saturday, February 1.
