WILLIAMSBURG, Va./TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team finished the second day of its three-day tournaments Saturday (Nov. 6). Half of the squad is competing at the William & Mary Invitational at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center in Williamsburg, Va., while the other half is competing at the Alabama Invitational at the Alabama Tennis Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Senior Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, Ohio/Hill Christian) and freshman Billy Pecor (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) extend their winning streak at the Tribe Invitational to three matches. Havens battled William & Mary’s Sebastian Vidal in a three-set match, 2-6, 6-3, and 1-0 (11-9). Pecor battled back after dropping a 4-6 decision to Anton Andersson (William & Mary) to win the final two sets of the match 7-5 and 1-0 (10-7).
Senior Daniel Stahl (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and sophomore Blas Moros (Boca Raton, Fla./Pine Crest) also picked up singles victories. Stahl defeated Ben Hoogland 6-1 and 6-3, while Moros handled Ben Guthrie 6-1, 6-1, both of William & Mary.
Niall Fitzgerald (Wicklow, Ireland/Blackrock College) and Spencer Talmadge (Hillsborough, Calif./Junipero Serra) teamed up to win two doubles matches, one over Jesse Kiuru and Sergio Wyss of Maryland (8-6) and the other over College of Charleston’s Mikael Trintignac and Tom Delme (8-3).
At the Alabama Invitational, Matt Johnson (Portage, Mich./Portage Central), Tyler Davis (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan) and Matt Dooley (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) all earned a pair of singles victories and are now set to compete in the finals of the singles semifinal round of their respective flights on the final day of the tournament.
In doubles play, senior Sean Tan (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) and freshman Ryan Bandy (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) picked up two doubles wins on the day. The duo downed Erik Kruetzer and Alex Skinner of Boston College 9-8 and University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Danny Manlow and Daniel Moser in an 8-3 decision.
Johnson and junior Sam Keeton (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill) grabbed two doubles wins on the day, downing Johnny Grimal and John Taylor of Memphis and Brian Locklear and Johnathan Schroeder of Boston College 8-3 and 8-2, respectively. Johnson, Keeton, Tan and Bandy compete in the semifinal round of play Sunday (Nov. 7).
