NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame fencing team earned a pair of exhibition wins Saturday over 2012 NCAA Champion Ohio State University in the first official matches held at the new Castellan Family Fencing Center.
The Fighting Irish men’s team won six of the final seven bouts in the modified relay to defeat the Buckeyes 60-37. Highlights included a 14-5 win by Gerek Meinhardt over Chris Colley and a 5-0 shutout for Ariel DeSmet against Sam Hardwicke-Brown in foil competition. John Hallsten (sabre) and Garrett McGrath (epee) were also bout winners for Notre Dame.
Wins in the final five bouts propelled the women’s fencing team to a 60-51 victory over Ohio State later in the afternoon. Lee Kiefer and Madison Zeiss were both double-winners for the Fighting Irish in the foil, helping Notre Dame erase what was a 40-39 deficit.
The Fighting Irish return to action Nov. 4 at the Penn State Open.
