ELON, N.C. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3-3, 0-2) defeated the Elon Phoenix (2-3, 0-0) in a 8-4 victory on the road on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Madison Rassas kept her scoring streak alive as she scored two goals while also recording a team-best two draw controls.
Kathryn Morrissey also found the back of the net on two occasions today and was followed by Kristen Shanahan, Kate Timarky, Fran Frieri, and Wynter Jock who each netted one goal a piece.
Isabel Pithie was in goal for the Irish and picked up third win of the season as she recorded 10 saves and allowed just four goals; she finished with an impressive .714 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
While Elon was the first on the board, Rassas would send home the first Irish goal of the day to tie it up at 1-1 with 4:48 remaining in the quarter.
Tied at 1-all going into the second period, Elon scored to take a 2-1 advantage. A free position goal from Frieri made it an even slate yet again at 2-2 with 4:38 remaining.
Morrissey found the back of the net on a pass from Emma Murphy to put Notre Dame in front at 2:21. The Irish led 3-2 at the half.
It didn’t take long for the Irish offense to get going in the third quarter as they scored two more goals in the first four minutes of the half to make it a 4-0 Irish run.
Mallaber scored her first career goal to open up the third and was followed by Rassas with an assist from Shanahan.
Leading 5-2 with 11:20 remaining, Elon scored but Shanahan answered shortly after to make it a three-goal game. The Phoenix found the back of the net one last time in the third quarter to make it a 6-4 ballgame heading into the final period.
Wynter Jock found Morrissey on a cut to the goal to give Notre Dame a 7-4 advantage with 10:23 left. With 10 seconds on the clock, Timarky would fire home one last Irish goal.
The Irish defense held the Phoenix scoreless in the final period to secure the 8-4 road win.
