PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Sophomore Lauren Gebauer (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington HS) carded the second-lowest individual round on Monday with a career-low even-par 72, helping the Notre Dame women’s golf team remain within striking distance after the second round of the 2003 adidas Fall Invitational. The Irish stand in sixth place with a team score of 607 (303-304), 17 strokes behind tournament leader (and defending champion) Baylor after 36 holes on the par-72, 5,844-yard Lansbrook Golf Club layout in Palm Harbor, Fla.
Baylor’s Josefin Svenningsson widened her individual lead to three shots, firing a one-under par 71 on Monday for a two-round total of 140 (-4). Kansas State’s Christine Boucher matched Svenningsson for low second-round honors, as her 71 helped the Wildcats post the day’s lowest team score (291) and move into second place, six shots behind Baylor. Sunday’s first-round leader, Missouri, slipped to third with a second-round 303 and has a two-day score of 597.
For the Irish, Gebauer rebounded nicely from her opening-round 80, surging into a tie for 19th place at eight-over par 152. Meanwhile, freshman Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates HS) continues to be Notre Dame’s most consistent golfer, carding a two-over par 74 and jumping into a ninth-place tie at 149 after two rounds. Nakazaki is looking to maintain an impressive streak that has seen the Irish rookie place in the Top 10 in her first four collegiate tournaments.
Another Irish freshman, Stacy Brown (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS), is in 16th place with a 36-hole score of 151 (76-75), although she is competing as an individual and her score is not included in Notre Dame’s team total. Junior Karen Lotta (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount HS) is in 24th place with a nine-over par 153 and like Brown, she is competing as an individual this week.
Sophomore Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) maintained her placement after the second round, staying in 30th place at 154 after her second consecutive round of 77. Senior co-captain Shannon Byrne (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove HS) wavered following a strong opening round, posting an 81 on Monday to tie for 33rd place at 156. Sophomores Suzie Hayes (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto College St. Stephen’s Green) and Sarah Bassett (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark HS) also struggled on day two, logging matching scores of 83. Hayes now is 44th place overall at 159, while Bassett is tied for 53rd place at 161.
Fourteen teams are competing in this year’s adidas Fall Invitational, including five teams in the Top 50 of the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index rankings (#30 Missouri, #40 Kansas State, #43 Notre Dame, #46 Nebraska and #47 Baylor). The final round of the tournament is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. (EDT) Tuesday with a shotgun start. Full results from the adidas Fall Invitational will be posted on the official Notre Dame athletics web site (www.und.com) and on the Notre Dame Sports Hotline (574-631-3000) following the completion of play.
