Irish Dominate at DeCicco Duals

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame fencing team continued its strong stretch this past weekend, going a combined 16-1 against opponents at the DeCicco Duals, an annual tournament hosted by the defending national champion Irish.

Notre Dame faced three division one programs in Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy and Lawrence while competing against many high caliber club teams, including Florida, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin.

The second-ranked Notre Dame women’s fencing team was a perfect 8-0 over the two-day stretch, and are now 17-1 this season. Felicity Sebastian, Kaitlyn Hulseberg and Maria Mozhaeva all went 12-0 on Saturday while Zoe Kim and Chelsea Delsoin racked up an 11-1 record on the opening day. Daena Talavera posted a 12-0 record on Sunday to improve to a perfect 15-0 on the season.

The men’s team, also ranked second in the country, was 8-1 over the weekend. The Irish posted dominant wins all weekend, including 26-1 wins over Detroit Mercy and Northwestern. Kent Iyoki was 14-1 on Saturday in Epee, a team-high in wins, while Jason Bae and Ian Greenbaum posted 13-2 records in Sabre on the first day of the home meet. In Epee, Kruz Schembri went 9-0 on both Saturday and Sunday to improve to 32-7 on his career.

Notre Dame will look to continue its early season success on Saturday, January 31st at the Laurence Schiller Duals, hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois.
