Notre Dame vs. Syracuse Boxscore
The University of Notre Dame volleyball team (6-9, 3-2) came out on fire and never looked back in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-17) victory over Syracuse (15-3, 3-2) on Friday night inside Purcell Pavilion. The Irish were propelled to their third consecutive win by both the offense (hitting .420 for the match) and the defense (12 team blocks)
Aubrey Hamilton led the hot-hitting offense with 13 kills on 22 attacks, posting a career-best .591 hitting percentage and logging her third consecutive double-digit kill game. Equally efficient for the offense was Lauren Tarnoff, who earned a kill on seven of her nine attacks (.778) and added a team-high seven blocks.
In addition to the 12 team blocks, the Irish defense was steady even when Syracuse was able to get the ball over the net. The Orange would manage just a .112 hitting percentage for the match, as Charley Niego led the team with 14 digs, followed by Hattie Monson (eight) and Kiara Schmidt (seven).
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The Irish took control of the first set with a 4-0 run to grab a 12-9 lead and force the first timeout of the match from Syracuse. Back-to-back Notre Dame blocks from Carline Meuth and Tarnoff, then Lindsey Miller and Hamilton pushed the lead to 14-10 and eventually 17-11 to force the Orange to take yet another timeout.
Notre Dame’s energy level pushed them through the end of the first set to earn the 1-0 lead. Accurate attacks in the middle of the defense from Hamilton and spirited work from the back line of the defense secured the match advantage.
Second Set
There was no loss of momentum in the second set as Notre Dame exploded for a 5-0 lead that eventually grew to 8-3 behind back-to-back kills from Hamilton. The sophomore outside hitter started the match with eight kills on her first 12 attacks.
Syracuse would never threaten in the second set, as the Irish would hit .391 as a team compared to -.031 for the visitors.
Third Set
Predictably, the third set was a back-and-forth affair early as Syracuse attempted to get back into the match. Meuth ended a marathon rally by both teams to put Notre Dame up 5-3, but the Orange came back to even it at 6-6.
Miller’s kill down the line assumed control for the Irish at 7-6 and the home team would not relinquish the lead. Syracuse posted a mini run to cut the lead to 20-17, but Meuth capped scramble play with a kill, then after an Orange timeout ended the match with a kill and a block (shared with Tarnoff).
