RALEIGH, N.C. — Notre Dame gave up one goal in the first half and one in the second and dropped a 2-0 result at NC State on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish and Wolfpack both had great scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes of play on Friday evening. NC State had a breakaway but Notre Dame goalkeeper came off his line and made a big stop to keep the match scoreless.
In the 19th minute Notre Dame nearly scored the opener. Felicien Dumas made a run into the box and got on the end of a cross, sending his header on target but the Wolfpack goalkeeper made the save.
The hosts got on the board in the 35th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Kuda Muskwe dribbled down the left flank and then fired a shot inside the far post for the opening goal.
Notre Dame nearly leveled in the 40th minute. Dumas picked out Mohamed Omar in the box but Omar’s shot went just wide of the post, sending the Irish to the halftime break with a 1-0 deficit.
The Wolfpack managed to double their lead in the 54th minute, as a Notre Dame turnover at the edge of its own box led to a Wolfpack shot that found the back of the net to make the score 2-0.
The Irish poured forward in the second half, trying to get back into the match, but the NC State defense held steady and the Wolfpack went on to win by a final score of 2-0.
HEAD COACH CHAD RILEY’S TAKE
On the team’s performance…
“Tonight was a tough one. Credit to NC State, they capitalized on a couple of our mistakes and got goals at key times in the game. Overall our performance was good but we did not finish our chances and we gave them two very good chances and they capitalized. We will learn from this and be better and tougher from the game.”
